Hey geek zone team.
I consider myself moderately ok at setting up wireless products,I'm an electrician by trade and have been doing various wireless set ups mainly farm related.
Anyways we have fibre 200/20 in and both supplied HG659B's have been causing hell problems with constant disconnects and either 2.4 or 5GHz networks failing to function after several hours of a reset. Thought stuff it,may as well get me a decent modem and go all in. Got D-Link viper DSL-2900AL. Set up according to PB TECH website seemed easy and it's working to a degree. My current speed test values are low. Hovering around the 7-12mbps down and .8 up. I'm unsure of what to do so reaching out for any help??? If possible.

Are you doing your speed test over wireless? If so, you'll never get anywhere near 200/20 speeds.

Hey yea I was over wireless but then again on the odd times the HG's were functional they gave around 120-170 down average. I'm just curious is all and querying that I haven't messed up my settings somewhere as I know there are smarter people on here than me for sure. Never had a semi-high end router/modem so don't know really what to expect. I know it has drag and drop QOS

did the hg659 have the latest firmware? this seems to have fixed the wifi issues somewhat

Yep went through all the go with both of them. I factory resetted both of them and then did the latest firmware updates on both and the usual pattern was work anywhere between 5-12 hrs then just stop functioning even though I was connected to wifi and it was showing full strength. When it happened you could never open a page on browser or do anything web based like YouTube etc.

Currently the D-Link viper is working on all my devices but the speeds are nowhere near 120-170 like before or even close to 200. Thanks for answering so fast

You definitely can. I get wireless speeds on my SGS7 phone of 200mbps. No problems.

My desktop PC gets 700mbps over wifi.....though actual through put seems to peak at about 37megaBYTES per second.......so effectively 400Mbits.

(D-Link "Saipan" router).

Well I guess I'll keep an eye on things and see how they progress. Do you guys know of anyone that has the same router? On any tips on spark fibre settings?

do you get the speed you are paying for over ethernet? if so then the issue lies in either the router or your devices.

there are no tips really it, either works or it doesnt, if its configured correctly at your end at at chorus/sparks

You can, but realistically in an urban enviroment it can often be pushing it.

This generalization is heavily weighted towards 2.4ghz wifi ofcourse, but 5ghz will slowly get used more too.

My Xbox one is hooked up over Ethernet and is IPv4 according to its stats. It pings back to the USA and on the other of HG's over wireless it averaged around 60-70 down so that's fine I know wireless isn't the be all and end all. But now over Ethernet it's around 20-28 down. I may try a reboot on all my gear, ONT included and see if that improves anything

If the new router has QOS functionality... turn it off.

It seems to be a function designed to stop the 'torrenters' in your household, not to improve general browsing speed.

there is no point in ringing spark, because you need to confirm weather (using a PC/Laptop/Mac) that you are getting the correct speed over ethernet. if you are then you issue is within your LAN and its nothing to do with spark. if you are not getting the correct speed over ethernet then give spark a call.

spark dont support the wifi in your house, they provide you the internet connection

MAX internet speed depends on the SLOWEST of these:

Device (laptop/iphone etc) - Wifi/Ethernet - Router handling of traffic - Chorus connection - Server (whatever you are connecting with on the other side of the world)

work backwords

Server - if you're selecting NZ speedtest server that should get you close to 200/20Mbps

Chorus -

Ethernet - best if possible, if not you need to use 5GHz wifi not 2.4GHz, and you should be about 3m away (not too near not too far).

Device - what device are you using?
