Hi all,

I have wired ethernet ports in each room of my house, how ever they do not connect to the internet. I have attached a photo of the wiring in the coms panel. I am totally out of my league here could anyone please give me any tips on how to get this sorted? This is my panel:

I don't think you've got data ethernet cabling setup, that looks more like youve got a bunch of RJ45 plugs in the room, wired up to operate as telephone extensions.

A typical setup is that the all the wiring in the house terminates in a patch panel - a strip of Rj45 connectors in that wiring box of yours. Labelled 1-8 for simplicity of conversation. Each port should have 8 wires connecting to it, but I think you've got 4 (you can get 4-wire data cabling but its very compromised - see here as an example.

You then have a similar strip of your own, with 1-x ports connecting to your router. You may have 4-ports built in, or you connect your own switch in. You connect the patch panel port to your kit using a short patch panel lead - normally 30cm long.

I see nowhere in this picture for the 'other end' of the data ports to connect to your kit... unless it's a bad photo?

Sorry for my ignorance but there is a telepermit ADSL filter wired up on the side (I don't no if this brings internet over the phone into the ethernet wires, sorry I don't know the terminology). other than that I have no idea. Would it be possible to wire those ethernet cable to a patch panel and then connect that to my router. Or alternatively should I get the gorse out of my pocket and pay someone to sort it out.

Looks as though, your "ethernet" connections there are simply 1 pair for each jack?

The bottom ones are clearly for Phoneline, this is why its linked into the adsl filter. however it seems the "data" part up the top end is also been wired for Phonelines - Even if it is using RJ45 ports.

is there one cable per port? Ethernet is a 1:1 relationship rather than something that can be connected in series like phonelines.

okay! thats so much more clear now, the label was blockingg and making it look like something else.

Right now, it appears the Phoneline is directly patched to the ethernet. you would want to remove those links and patch in your own cat5e runs to the router from there.

Cool so why would the phone be patched to the ethernet? would it be as simple as wiring each port to a switch hub then pluging in my router?

What are the wall outlets like? RJ-45 or BT phone sockets? Or dual sockets? You'd have to check each outlet as mentioned and perhaps remove one to check how the end wall sockets are wired for phone or possibly Ethernet. Do the phones plug straight in or use an adapter/pig-tail in to an RJ-45 socket?

You can patch in to the existing cat5/5e blue Ethernet cables towards the top (not the blue single pair used to jump phone service at the very top) if you only want 100Mbps from a wall outlet to a switch in that comms panel. Depending on how the wall outlets are wired.

You could install a DSL jack in that panel and put your router in there and a switch (if a router doesn't have enough switched ports in-built). The switch would need to be patched to those blue Ethernet cables. The pairs in question would normally be the green and orange one's going to the rooms via the blue Ethernet cables for 100Base-T.

If you want Gigabit Ethernet all pairs are needed on those Cat5 cables so it wouldn't be able to carry phone service or DSL over them without installing another cable to the rooms or disconnecting them from the lines to the rooms where you want Ethernet.

If the wall ouetlets are normal RJ-45 with the phone service connected to them, you run the risk of damaging phone or Ethernet adapters by just plugging a computer in to one of the outlets. So you'd need to see how the wall outlets are wired too or disconnect phone service to them.

I have what looks to be very similar unit, SmartSystems Digital Smart panel

I have 12 ethernet ports in the house. When we bought it last year, the owner said if you want to use a phone, use this adapter. The connection in the formal living room has two or three ports (the other rooms have 1 x ethernet and 1 x coax) so I guess if the port on the patch panel is connected to the voice port on the ONT/router that gives you phone. I never use the phone. They used a LL hence he advised me

As @coffeebaron says, you need a proper patch panel installed. It looks as if each cable going to an outlet has all four pairs connected, but they are just connected to a punch down block, rather than a proper patch panel. This would have worked (albeit difficult to change configuration) for distributing voice around the house, but not useful for computer networking.

Not necessarily this specific one, but similar to this - the blue cables going to the outlets around the house get punched down on the back, and you end up with an RJ45 outlet which corresponds to each wall outlet you have. Short patch cables are then used to connect these outlets to your modem/router which can reside in that cabinet.

Actually, what do you mean by there is no internet?

Are you just trying to plug your modem in to an outlet somewhere, and it's not connecting, or are you trying to distribute a network connection to various places around the house?

If you're just looking for where to plug your modem in, it's probably a little simpler if that is all you are trying to achieve.

Much more revealing. So the top strip of the first row (blue/white pairs) and the lower strip (green/white?) all look like they have been hard bridged to provide just a telephone line function to the other side of the strip, where it appears you do in fact have 8 wires running to each socket.

As others have said, it now becomes much easier to make some change, but it will require installation of a patch panel - looks like 8-ports - and another patch panel for the telephone connection (8-ports), depending on what you want for the future.

Next question of course is how much and how long. personally i'd get a data person to do the work as they can do it quicker than you and have the right tools, plus offer a warranty for their work :-)

The only reason to install a patch panel is to make it easier to patch and change things.
That wiring method will support data no problem but you just need some tails coming off that 110 block the outlets are wired to. Just get some solid cat5e cable, terminate with rj45 plugs and then punch down on to the blocks. Then you will be able to just patch them in to a switch.

Edit: where in the country are you? Would be less than a half hour job.

Whoa thanks all for the replies. Chevrolux Im in Christchurch I think your right it may be easier to get someone in.

There is a filter wired in does this split the signal coming in from my phoneline into phone and internet? Is this wired correctly?
