Hi everyone, we've just switched from ADSL to VDSL with Spark.

As part of this, we've upgraded to the new router that Spark sent us, an HG630b.

On Sparks 'test your speed' page we get 11Mbps.  Which is marginally up from 9Mbps on ADSL.  On SpeedTest.net, I get the same.

The Chorus technician suggested I check the router for the actual speed - he said these sites can be wrong.

But I don't know how to do this.

I can log into the router, but there just doesn't seem to be a page showing connection speed info.

Any help much appreciated, TIA.

@Davo36 - Welcome to the GZ forums.

A quick search through the manual makes no mention of speed or link anywhere nor any helpful mention of status.

If you've moved from ADSL to VDSL, one of the questions to ask is do you still use a splitter / DSL filter?

Others will also ask you how far away from the Exchange you are. Might want to try and find that info in the meantime.

Please keep this GZ community vibrant by contributing in a constructive & respectful manner.

Ok, so yes, we do have a splitter.  Where the copper cable comes into the house.

It's been there for around 2 years.  Have a cat 6 cable taking the DSL signal directly to our router - but via a jackpoint on the wall - then a filter which plugs into that...

We are 2 to 2.5kms from the exchange, this is in Titirangi, Auckland.

I assume that the Splitter  / filter is a VDSL compatible  one??

@Old3eyes  Well, it's a little black box approx half the size of a cigarette pack.

The only writing of any kind on it is on the Telecom accrediation sticker.

And it says: This EPL-EPVDSL2 VDSL2 splitter may be connected to the Telecom Network.  PTC 285/09/003.

Here is a photo of it:

I'll let some else comment on this but that PTC number  indicates it was issued in 2009.   Not sure if the filters  were ADSL / VDSL in those days..

VDSL and ADSL speeds would be normal for at least 2.5+ km. Shouldn't have been installed.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Well I have no idea either.  2009 is a while ago though...

The Spark staff repeatedly told me (when ordering VDSL) that the splitter would be fine (they didn't ask for any details).

@Ross, sorry I don't know what you mean?

Are you saying we shouldn't have upgraded to VDSL?  Or that the splitter shouldn't have been installed?

We have a HG630b. Try this:-

- Login to the Routers web UI

- Click on  'WAN' in the left navigation bar

- Click on 'ADSL/VDSL' in the top navigation bar.

That will bring up the statistics for your VDSL connection, including downstream and upstream line rates. Hope this helps.

VDSL shouldn't have been offered. Your attenuation must be 35+ dB. Guide for VDSL is around 15 dB.

 @dclegg Oh man, thanks.

This is what I see, is this any good?  Of course I'd like way more speed, but think I'm too far away from the exchange.

The 2 attenuation figures are shown in the image above, are you saying I should go back to ADSL?

ADSL speed would ideally be about the same. I would keep the VDSL if you think it is a slight improvement.

Thanks very much.  I guess I will keep it since it's a wee bit better.

To be fair, Spark did say I was right on the edge of the boundary and so they couldn't promise anything, but I decided to try it.

It was a mission though, they cut the internet off on Saturday and it only came back up today, so 4 days without internet.  It was a bad port at the exchange apparently...

Thanks for the help.
