Ok, so I've just ordered the Asus RT-AC68U wireless router from amazon. Obviously this router does not include a built in dsl modem as far as I'm aware. Can you guys recommend me a decent dsl modem to complete the setup? the cabinet is pretty much less than 60 meters away from where our house is so I'm pretty sure I'll be getting some pretty decent line rates.

If the cabinet is that close then you really should be on vdsl

Your line rates won't be any different from somebody who's 2km away... Which poses the big question of why you're using ADSL2+ when you would have a perfect VDSL2 connection.

If you suddenly decide you want VDSL2 you're not going to need to buy a VDSL2 modem for bridge mode (such as the Draytek) you may as well have just got the DSL-AC68U brand new in New Zealand as it would have been cheaper.

we are currrently with FLIP as our isp, and we pay $89.95 for unlimited data and fixed line, i feel that adsl+ is more than what we need at the moment.. I really don't see much benefit by upgrading to VDSL. We are just cutting cost down as best as possible for services and by eating less avacados to help us to be able to purchase a house in auckland within the next 5 years. uh huh.

i was gonna get the DSL-AC68U modem/router combo, the cheapest is around $387. Also one of the reason I like to keep the devices seperate is so that if one of them (modem/router) dies, I can easily get it replaced one of the components without having to replace the whole unit. plus the router only cost $240NZ through amazon, the draytec modem in nz cost just under $90? , so it still works out much cheaper.

If you just want a reliable ADSL modem to bridge to a router, and price is important, then a Dynalink RTA1320 is still a good option - pick them up really cheap on TradeMe. Go for the later revision (black case, not beige) as it has better cooling. As long as you are on a EUBA connection, you can bridge it to the router, which does all the authentication etc.

That's not a particularly good deal though. The Flip brand will be disappearing soon anyway and Vocus will probably just migrate everybody to Slingshot - you could be getting VDSL2 from them with a phoneline for $5 less per month.

oh ok.. can you name me a better deal than what we are currently on then? we just need bband unlimited with fixed line, we also roll over 60mins of free calling to national landlines and mobiles.. I couldn't find where that offers the equivalent for cheaper..

The fibre is layed out on our street and i think it's going live during may.. Imo i really don't see much benefit of upgrading to either vdsl or fibre for us. Getting between 15Mbit/s - 18Mbit/sec average throughput is more than enough for us 2 people in the household. We just do the usual daily torrent unix isos, youtube, netflix and chill and md general browsing.

Considering i've bricked 4 of these through overheating, i'd say they are a little EOL.

Personally my favorite bridging modem nowdays is the NF4V, Given they are slightly on the higher end for simply a modem though!

even as a low user, i'd recommend vdsl particularly for a short line... among other things, minor reductions to crosstalk in the bundle from the lower power levels is certainly a positive factor.

plus in the event you upload things, hey your not constrained by ADSL's poor upload bandwidth.

BigPipe have unlimited ADSL for $79/mo and unlimited VDSL for $89/mo if you don't need the phoneline :) That Flip deal isn't really a deal... There is also Skinny who offer the best connection type for cheap too along with a router (https://www.broadbandunlimited.nz/).

ah i see, yeah I've seen that big pipe's offer but nah it doesn't suit us as my other half needs the fixed line. I'm on skinny too, I don't spend a cent with them though, I just use their skinny collect app ( mobile ads for data app) which i get 200MB every month of free data just for having it installed on my fone. So i pretty much just use data/whatsapp/viber to communicate while on the get go. Yup I'm that cheap, now days, you make make money by saving money where every cents count :).

Putting money into any form of ADSL modem when you are on the verge of getting fiber available doesnt seem that wise.

Most of the ISPs will give you a great deal for a phoneline and internet over fiber since they can cut chorus out of the equation for the phone part by using their router for it.
