I have a new laptop running vista premium, and I'm trying to connect to a home network, run from a DLink router. I have the WAP key, I have strong signal, DHCP is enabled, Automatic IP is enabled (Ive tried screwing around with IP, gateway, subnet mask, all to no avail) but I can only get "Limited Connectivity" which is limited in that I can't do anything with it.
My diagnostic passed everything but the Ping test, saying no response from default gateway or DHCP server. Any suggestions?

What IP is the DHCP supposedly giving you ?
If its a 169.x.x.x then thats Windows throwing you one rather than the router/AP.

What IP is your router/AP on ? I take it you can connect to it fine from another machine or ethernet.

have you used this Dlink with Wifi before ?

the ip im getting is a random windows one, but ive tried changing the ip address to one that i know is recognisable by my router (10.1.1.106 for example) but it doesnt work. ive used a d-link air-plus wireless adapter card in an old (now ancient) laptop, which until tonight has worked fine. i've tried copying settings from other computers in the network, ive tried resetting all settings. didnt work.

If youre getting the windows IP, then the system isnt getting DHCP at all.

So basically you have the following in your system

IP : 10.1.1.106
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 10.1.1.1 (assuming .1 is your router)
DNS : 10.1.1.1 (or your ISP DNS)

If everything is set correctly then its a bit odd.... altho, D-Link is not my 1st choice in Wifi gear (or 201st choice... but thats me).

What sort of new laptop is it (model etc) ? Try turning off any firewall/security software (I know most new laptops come with Symantec Internet Security which can be fun to work with resolving network issues0

If it was me at this point, Id reset the router to factory default, and start afresh. If you do go down that road, ensure youve copied your password/username/settings.

In the Vista network connections page, does it say the Wireless interface is "Bridged" ? If so un-bridge it.

Had fun and games yesterday when helping my neighbour setup wifi, couldn;t get it to work and then I saw the whole bridged thing, undid that and hey presto.

Worth a look :-)

the network isn't bridged. its pretty secure, but im sure ive got the right passkey etc. if i set the ip to 10.1.1.106, it wont connect at all, but if i use windows random ip, it at least gets me limied connectvity. i cant get to the router settings cos our techie changed the username and password.

That's probably what you need, as you need the same settings along with the router. If they're different (in some sort of way), it can cause issues.

Limited connectivity could mean anything (connecting to router but not internet, etc)...
