Hi,

I have a set up were the IP Address is 192.168.3.XX but I am having an issue where the network and internet can work awesome for a couple of days and then just "die". In the network sharing centre it is still showing network access however when I try to ping google.co.nz it should show like this PING google.co.nz (172.217.25.131) however its showing PING google.co.nz (192.168.1.254):. The config is Modem, patch panel and a unmanaged switch.

Any ideas :)

Does rebooting your modem fix it?

Sounds like the modem is the issue - what model? Firmware up to date?

When it is "dead" can you ping 8.8.8.8?

Is 192.168.1.254 the IP of your router? Your addressing scheme of 192.168.3.0/24 would suggest not, but just want to double check it isn't a typo.

Is the 172xx address your public address? If so then maybe edit it out of your post. IPs that begin with 192xx are non routable on the public internet, so no problem to post them on forum threads.

Also in most home networks, the modem/router and all connected devices should have IP addresses with the first 3 parts of the address the same. And only the 4th part changes between devices.

Do all devices loose internet access at the same time, or only some of them? When the internet has died, can you still login to the routers admin page? And also try pinging your router.

www.google.com resolving to 192.168.1.254 will be part of the modem's WAN down spoofing. Either your WAN interface (e.g. xDSL dropouts) is going down or there are interoperability issues with the modem WAN down feature and captive portal detection of your OS.

A few years back there were interoperability issues with Telecom/Spark's Technicolor modems and Windows 8 captive portal detection.

It will be the router trying to redirect to itself when the Internet is down. So troubleshoot why the internet goes down and it should stop resolving to the private IP address.

No I can't ping anything in the outside world I am going to do a IP Scan tomorrow to see what else can be found
