Hi everyone

I have problem with my new router and I'm hoping to get some help fixing this issue.

I have had a slingshot router (TP150) for a around 3- 4 years with my fibre connection, we even kept it when we moved on to our current provider, Spark fibre. We now have a TP-Link Archer C60 router which has better specs all round which we want to use instead of the TP150 router.

The problem I am having is that, I use Sparks guide on how to setup a non-spark router for fibre and it fails to connect to the internet. I have chatted with the help team at spark but they don't seem to know how to help. I have also called TP-Link and they have confirmed that I am using the correct settings for a fibre connection for the model router I am using. They also said it has to be the PPPoE username and password thats the problem.

The weird thing is my old router (which was working fine) still has the old slingshot username (username@slingshot.co.nz) and connects fine on Sparks fibre plan.

I want to use the same username and password on my new router (TP-Link) but I dont know what the password is and Slingshot cant give it to me or reset it because I am not with them anymore. Also Spark keeps saying that i should be using "user@spark.co.nz" for username and "password" for the password but this also does not work.

Have you guys got any suggestions?

Regards

Vijay N

Have you setup the VLAN tagging correctly? (VLAN10)

From what I can see the C60 doesn't support VLAN Tagging (So you might be out of luck, unless you bridge the existing router)

According to this page: https://www.dove.co.nz/products/networking-and-adsl/network-routers/16527 it does do VLAN tagging. PB Tech also advertise it as UFB ready.

Thanks for the replies.

Man I had no idea about VLAN. So you reckon it has nothing to do with my username and password but the option of VLAN on my router?

I just did a quick search, would this be able to work: https://www.tp-link.com/au/faq-1766.html

I wonder why Spark doesnt say anything about routers should have VLAN features, unless I missed something.

I can't seem to find it anywhere in the UI:

The Vlan tagging settings for TP link are a bit obscure but if you set on advanced settings/network/IPTV the following

Internet VLAN ID : 10

it should work

I also have the following settings but I don't think they matter too much.

IP-Phone VLAND ID : 1

IPTV VLAND ID : 2

Ah so "IPTV" is a way for me to input sparks settings for VLAN? I do have that IPTV settings on my router, its under advance internet settings.

I'm not home at the moment so I cant try it out, but I will try this out once I get home and report back.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Yep, VLAN is verymuch required.

to your question on your slingshot address, we (spark) authenticate against the port itself rather than the PPP details. so as long as there isn't like, an html encoded char in the username you will be good to go. (It does happen...)

Missing the VLAN configuration is one of the most common errors with third party device setups for Fibre and VDSL.

It's an uncommon configuration in NZ, for a UFB port to be ordered untagged.

Oh ok that makes sense with authentication process. The Spark and Slingshot help desk guys where stunned when I told them I was using that slingshot username for the Spark connection which made me think something went wrong with the switch over to Spark. i think they wernt technical support though, just normal customer service guys.

You learn something everyday aye.

can sometimes be archaic information folk hold onto...

Likely what happenend is, that agent had a few cases of unsupported values in the box, and changing it to user@spark.co.nz fixes it.

One of those rather annoying things where, a fault can be fixed by Action X that also resolved issue Y without showing itself.

my favourite is, Modem resets. Often while doing this, the customer fiddles around and pushes a loose cable in that was causing a unstable DSL link.

This would be attributed to the reset, but realistically it was fixing of the cable.

All good now!. I now have internet finally! Thanks guys

I just have a question regarding changing settings. Every time I change something, the connection gets disconnected and I cant connect to the internet, even if I revert back to the known good settings. I do try to reboot but that doesn't help.

The only way for me to get it going again, is if I reset the router to factory default and re-enter all settings and reboot the router.

Is this normal?

The only settings I want to change is the DNS settings to a smart DNS and the QoS settings, but every time I do it automatically disconnects after saving the settings.

As a side note, when i do try to connect after changing settings, the error code says WAN port not connected or something like that.

Hey everyone, I just thought I would update you on whats happening.

As I said earlier, I got my fibre going finally but was having problems when changing settings such as smart dns or Qos.

The problem appears to be Spark not "okaying" the new settings so no authentication happens which means no internet. But when I reset the router back to default, Spark then knows these settings to be authentic and allows the connection.

This is coming from a TP-Link technical help person on the phone by the way

Does anybody know if this is true?
