I just purchased this modem to replace an old TP Link W8690N 2 weeks ago. When I used the Asus modem at that time, the connection speed was fine, but connection kept dropping. I called Spark and they fixed it last week (they said there was a wiring problem on the street side).

After they 'fixed' the wiring, the new modem had slow speeds. With the old modem, the ADSL speeds are normal (around 10 Mbps download and 0.9 Mbps upload), but on the Asus modem, the speeds drop to 0.2 Mbps down. The modem reports DSL down link speed of 7769 Kbps. I have set up the modem according to Spark's settings on their website.  I thought the modem broke at first, but I have tried it at my friend's house (they also have ADSL and use Spark and also live in Auckland) and it works completely fine and has good speed with the default settings. I also tried different phone jack wires, splitter (we have landline) and another telephone jackpoint, but it has the same problem. I connected my old modem's Ethernet output to the new modem's Ethernet input, with that the speed is acceptable.

The line attenuation is about 14.5 dB, the SNR margin is around 7.8 dB. From what I understand, the line attenuation is normal but I don't know about SNR margin.

I have already had Spark technicians come to my house again to check wiring, but they said they won't help us at all with non-Spark modems. They said the wiring is fine, after they fixed it last week. Any ideas how to fix the problem?

ok.

let me make sure i'm following right.. as your post reads it to be a modem is making the connection be slow - but i don't feel that's the actual issue.

You had a fault, causing disconnections. You bought a new modem suspecting that would fix it. This didn't improve.

you then logged a fault with Spark, and a chorus tech came out and checked the line. They fixed a street side fault.

Since then your speeds still have not come back up?

Yes, that's right. However the speed is fine on the old modem, but the new one has low speed when connected to the same line.

How are you testing the speed? Is that a sync rate, or your results from something like speedtest.net?

If it is a speedtest.net result, what is your DSL sync rate? That is the only important thing at present.

I tested the speed with speedtest.net. Not sure where to find sync rate, is that the DSL link speed? If so, its 7735 kbps down, 776 kbps up.

Interesting... Lets have a dig.

Do the following for me.
Login to myspark, run check my broadband. (Atleast to the stage that you get the 3 status icons)
Wait 10 mins change modem and then do check my broadband again.

Once you have done that dm me your case number, account number and approximately the times tests were ran.

Different modems will sync differently but a 3mbit change is normally outside of that variance.

You should only ever be doing speed tests via wired ethernet cable from a laptop/desktop to your modem. Doing it over wireless, including your cellphone, is not going to give you good results.

I'll try that tomorrow as I need to find the MySpark password first.

You need to provide more information.

1) Please post a Speedtest from your desktop PC / Laptop connected via Ethernet (not WiFi).
2) During this Speedtest, please ensure that nothing else is on your network. I mean this.
3) Please also post the status page from your router showing your line speed, attenuation etc.

Without doing these things, nobody can help you here. I honestly suspect in your case it is upload congestion caused by something uploading / backing up photos or something along those lines.

Old modem speed with a few devices on network. This is quite a normal speed for us.

New modem speed has increased slightly now, but is still slower than the old one. It is also around 5Mbps with the same devices on the network.

Did you DM that info to @hio77 ?

Your downstream sync rate looks pretty poor for the attenuation...

upstream is also low for it.

What sort of cable do you have to the jackpoint.

That asus has "performance mode" have you messed with this - it looks like you have, which will have adverse affects on the connection.

I can't find any setting called performance mode in the router settings. I don't think I changed anything similar to that.

The cable and splitter are the ones included in the box with the Asus modem. They work fine with the old modem.
