hi
i was just wondering the otherday, since there aren't many free wifi hotspots in auckland... i was wondering if there's something like a USB device of somesort which would send out wifi signals so that i could use wifi at an internet cafe?
so suppose my computer is hooked up to the internet via LAN cable to my WIRED router, would there be anyway to access wifi on my ipod touch?

Help would be appreciated, thanks

There is this sort of thing. It's designed as an Access Point, WiFi Router or Wireless client.

Portable Dlink DWL-G730AP Access Point Router

I got one of these puppies and it can plug into a router (via Ethernet) or Laptop (via USB) and provides WiFi.

its meant for places like Hotel room that don't have wireless, so you can plug this into the Wall socket and provide yourself with WiFi.

Plug and play and works like a charm.

Of course this may not be what you were asking.

There are many USB WiFi devices. They are used to enable WiFi on computers that don't have wireless capabilities - mostly desktops.

Your iPod touch already has WiFi so it obviously doesn't need it.

To wirelessly access your Internet at home you should really get a wireless router with a built-in access point and use it instead of your wired router.

As for Internet access on cafes... Wi-Fi range is on average 100m to 300m. Even if you have WiFi at home it means you won't be able to access it on your iPod touch when you are out and about.

man.. i just read my post myself and it is quite confusing haha...
i want a wireless router that sends a wifi signal to my ipod touch.
i want to make it so that i have wifi access by plugging *the device* into a computer which is connected to the internet.

That portable Dlink Router does just that. As I said it will plug into your Laptop and do it, or if you have a ADSL router, it will plug into that and act as an Access Point.

I got mine on Trademe for about $80.
