I have long used an IPcop firewall for my home network - it worked fine on Vodafone cable modem using static IP but I have changed to Orcon fibre and they use DHCP so set up was too simple but it will not get into the internet.

I have to use a router that is set to DHCP to get the internet and then go through that router to set up my Ipcop

So what is the deal is there more to DHCP than I know - has the technology moved ahead or am I missing something????

Hi, just confirming that you are attempting to get a DHCP lease on vlan10, not the native/untagged of the wan interface.

I dont understand your lingo - What is Vlan10?

there is an Orcon modem on the wall it has a ethernet cable going from the modem to a router and then we plug our laptop into the router

That router gets onto the internet through the modem with a DHCP lease - I wanted to take away the router and plug in my Ipcop which I set using the the same settings in the Ipcop as I did in the router but the Ipcop cant or wont get a leas as in no internet

You'll need to set a vlan tag of 10 onto your WAN interface

Has been years since I last used IPcop but i think this screenshot is where you'll still need to do it. Not sure what the vlan 610 is for in this example, so don't copy that.

IPCop is now unmaintained also and has not been updated since 2015. There are several serious Linux exploits possible for it and personally I wouldn't use it.

You should consider migrating to OpenSense or PFSense.

Thanks for that - I did check the orcon site they do say to use id is 10 so I will try that

Hah! IP Cop is a blast from the past!

Do yourself a favour and chuck either pfSense on to that box or buy a RouterOS x86 license and have an even better time.

I tried IPfire - it was able to get the internet on the modem directly but I could not access the firewall from a remote computer - I was able to set up a dynamic DNS it turned green in color which meant it was good to use but I could not get through to the firewall from a remote computer - the fire wall rules are too complicated and no matter what rule you make you cant get in (of course you can get in from the network at home but if you go to some other place cant get in - believe me I tried 30 different ways no luck I had to give up - I did it a few years ago with the IPcop dint have any trouble

I tried Opnsense, it looks great wish I could get it to work properly but I could not even get the red IP to show up -

its not like the old days when all you had to do was tick DHCP and you were on

Orcon, from memory, are a little funny when it comes to IP leases. If I remember rightly (and I am happy to be corrected here) the lease has to expire on your old router before your new router will successfully connect. This is what I found.

I'd strongly consider ditching IPCop as it is an end of life product now and insecure and go with Opensense. There are many guides on the internet and as long as you've got DHCP w/ VLAN 10 configured you're good to go. If it doesn't connect then phone Orcon who can "expire" your previous IP lease allowing your new router to connect. Else, if you spoof the MAC address of your old router in Opensense it should connect again with the same IP. Again, happy to be corrected here, this is just what I read a few times on here. I am not personally with Orcon.

It will require a bit of trial and error but you'll get there and the payoff is you've got a much newer, secure system to work with along with many new features. Port forwarding is simple enough and again, there are heaps of guides on this sort of thing otherwise I am sure people on here are happy to assist.
