Hi All,

I have a typical house wiring where the layout is similar to in the diagram. COM panel have ONT and LAN connection end points to the multiple rooms. As ONT is only servicing on LAN port 1, I have connected it into the lounge and hooked up HG659B router. That basically does internet connection and works as WiFi access point. Room 1 and Room2 Lan connections are not working as expected.

Ideally I want to use all the LAN ports. COM panel serving internet to all LAN points and moving WiFi AP into Room 2. TV connected directly to lounge LAN port.

My thought was to move router into my COM panel but as you can see its small and cant move my HG659B in there. (I have multiple one so I was hoping I can use the 2nd one as Wifi access point.)

So I need your suggestions please, I can buy a small router(gigabit) and place it in there or I can pay electrician to increase the size of COM panel (Big $$$ which I want to avoid). Can you please suggest a router fit for purpose or If there is an alternative better option please let me know?

I'm assuming you only have one cable from the garage to the lounge.

If that's the case you're really going to need to squeeze a router into the comms box and then use a small switch in the lounge for all the devices. Or if they're connected wirelessly a second access point if WiFi connectivity isn't great.

A nasty alternative is to split the cable so that you carry 2x100Mbit links rather than a 1Gb link. See https://superuser.com/questions/1079667/looking-to-wire-one-cat6-ethernet-cable-into-two-keystone-jacks

I don't recommend this though. Especially if you've got gigabit internet cause you'll be limited to 100Mb.

Afraid I can't recommend a small router (cause I don't know sizes to suggest). Might be useful to supply some dimensions that you believe it needs to fit into.

If you play round with the HG659B you can pop the "foot" off it, so its a flat box, with a bit of cable tidying it might be possible to get it in the cabinet

Hi, that box is a pdl power distribution box, so the lid screws over it and leaves quite a bit of depth, so as others have suggested the HG659 with the foot wacked off should fit in no problems.

Just a question though, how is the cable connected to LAN1 of the ONT can we have an updated closeup photo of that?

Yes tried that already. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit.

Its coming from the wall and directly hooked up with ONT with RJ45. Funny thing is that I dont know why I have a 4 ping wall plug in the COM box and its not connected anywhere. Thinking of unbolting the whole thing and figuring out the rest of the connection. That might give me more space.

Yes. I looked into that option as well. Confused between Edgerouter X vs ER Lite vs MikroTik RB750R2 (as NZKC) suggested.

Thanks for this. Exactly what I was looking for. but just confused between this and Edgerouter X or ER Lite.

Nah. Tried several ways. The annoying bit is the extra connection from the dish blocking the space.

Hi, as that Sat connection is not going to change very often, why not just pull the box out and push the Sat connection back into the wall cavity

Yup thats a good idea. Also can get rid of that 4 RJ45 sockets on the wall. That will free up some space. and can route cables through that for easy access.

Just wondering if its worth investing in advance router (Ubiquiti or Mikrotik) then HG659b.

Hi, me personally I would choose an Mikrotik everytime, however an RB750Gr3 (aka HexS) will not do full Gigabit and will tap out around 400-500Mb/s if using pppoe, if you are not planning to go for a GigE WAN anytime soon then that would be my perferred option. An RB4011 will do GigE but is slightly bigger and closer to $300

Otherwise the Edgerouter is the way to go as long as you use hardware offload, as to which model, you would have to ask guys that commonly use them, but all the lower end ones (ER-X/ERX-SFP) have the same spec, the ER4 is twice that spec, and twice the $ to boot, but pretty sure the ER-X is all you will require for GigE WAN
