Hey guys really fresh here and am pretty ametuer with my interent settings etc, so ive just set up my ps4 and i see the NAT type is at 3 which is crap for gaming. Now Im with nova which since going on the forums im finding out very quickly that they probably arnt the best crowd to be with. Now to set my Nat type to 1 or open for gaming i need to have access to my router which with nova im kinda screwed ? Is that correct? or is there another way to allow my ps4 to have a good connection, cheers.

IIRC Nova use CG-NAT. That's probably the issue. Give them a call and see if you can get a public IP.

That said, have you found an online game that doesn't work? Grab one of the free to play online games (eg Fortnite) and see if it goes. You may find it's all a non issue these days.

As above. And never change security settings or port forward on your router unless you know the consequences - these is not what you want to do but what will happen when you do it. Port forwarding something to a device on your network makes it unprotected on the Internet and that Not a Good Thing (TM).

Further follow-up as I was distracted by the kids sports

You do not want type 1. That's actually no NAT and means your PlayStation has a public IP address. Unless you have a firewall between that and the rest of the internet (and you know how to configure it correctly) you'll be exposed.

You want to get to type 2 if type 3 is giving you grief (but don't try to change it unless you find real problems).

Yea cheers. I wont do anything until I speak to nova. One more question. I have my 1st ethernet port running to my computer which is fine but when i plug in another ethernet cable and run it to my playstation it doesnt recognize it and wont connect. Is that something that needs to be addressed in the router settings? Any ideas? Thanks heaps for your advice guys.

The ISP's who use such technology should make it supremely clear on their marketing material that online games and certain types of realtime applications may not function properly.

Plugged into what, the router provided by Nova or the fibre ONT?

It doesn't break 99.9% of games and there is nothing to suggest it's broken anything for the OP either in their post.

I think there was a time when many gaming vendors required port forwarding either manually or via upnp, that seems to have disappeared as vendors realised it was a bad idea as it was often hard for many players to setup, and they were creating massive security issues for players, and in reality there was no need if they did there engineering properly.

My PS4 Pro has been running in Nat 2 for as long as I can remember. No issues with online gaming or downloads.
