Hi there,

I'm trying to get a PFSense install working with a Spark Fibre connection.

The modem is an HG659b and PFSense is installed on an i5 mini-pc.

I can get through the installation fine and assign ports with link lights etc. The issue is that my LAN IP ends up being stuck on a 169 self-assigned address and I cannot for the life of me access the web GUI.

There's plenty of info for what I need to configure in PFSense for fibre but I can't tell what I need to change (if anything) In the hg659b modem settings? I assumed 'bridge mode' same as I have done in the past with VDSL.

Has anyone done something similar? What settings/changes would you recommend on the Modem side?

Hi, why do you need the HG659 in the mix, can you not place vlan10 on the pfsense wan interface and put a pppoe session on that.

There is no such thing as "bridge mode" with a fibre connection because there is nothing to bridge. As mentioned above you should take the 659b out of the picture and have the firewall authenticating itself.

So I should be able to go ONT -> PFSense -> Switch without the Spark box at all?

I assumed it needed to be in the mix.

Still learning. It's taken 2 years to get to this point! Had to wait for a neighbour to move. Now it's time get into router, switch, network rack and structured cabling 🤟

Yep, that's the one 👍

Just setup the WAN settings as applicable for the Spark fibre & you're good to go.

Are you using a dedicated NIC with multiple ports in the PFsense box?

Create a VLAN10 sub interface and PPPoE connection with <anything@anything.just.not.blank> and a password of <anythingjustnnotblank> and you are good to go, plug your WAN port directly into the ONT

Okay, just tried for the second time.

ONT - Swapped cable from WAN of HG659b with igb0 (WAN) on Qotom mini PC.

Reset PFSense to factory defaults and assigned interfaces for WAN & LAN.

Can't access webgui from my Mac or Windows PC hardwired to the LAN port. Just get self assigned IP from DHCP.

I've tried disabling Windows Firewall, Manually setting IP addresses. Nothing works?

What am I missing here?

Sounds like you might have got your cables around the wrong way?

Make sure you don't turn DHCP on the wan vlan, or it wont connect :)

This might sound stupid, but have you got multiple ports on the NIC? You may have accidentally connected to a spare one instead of the LAN configured one. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish which way the ports are numbered. I.e, port 1 is mistaken for port 4.

What does the display of the Pfsense box show for LAN details?

Simple thing to check; is your windows PC on the same subnet as the pfsense box? Try assigning a static ip on the windows pc of 192.168.1.10 with gateway as 192.168.1.1

It was the wrong LAN port 🙃 I thought it would be 0/1/2/3/4 but I think it's closer to 0/2/3/1.
