First of all I'm using a linksys WAG200G as the modem and the router with 3 computers and a XBOX. However I bought a linksys WAG54GL since no more ports are available in my existing WAG200G modem router. Current configuration looks like this:

I want to use the WAG200 as the ADSL modem and primary router and WRT54GL as secondary router. This is primarily to keep track of data usage of individual pcs with the open source dd-wrt firmware. This is what i want the home network to look like:

I have connected everything together, but can't access the internet from any pcs. I can access the internet if I connect to WAG200G. What are the network settings that I need to configure in WRT54GL? Am I doing this right?

I know with my network, the cable between the WAG200G (modem router) and the WAG54GL (secondary router) has to go onto a free ethernet port on the WAG54GL NOT the WAN port otherwise the internet will not work. Did you do this?

Just a thought
Oh and also have to disable all the DHCP server stuff on the secondary router

Thanks. Got it working now. Initially I did have connection from the WAG200G to WRT54GL on the "Internet" port. Now connected to spare ethernet port. Also disabled DHCP server.

Do you know why it should be connected to ethernet port on the WRT54GL? And how can I access dd-wrt setup page (ie default ip 192.168.1.1).

I don't personally have those routers, I have an airport express and old d-link router (macs and pcs in the house), but I did read when setting up my network that the second router shouldn't be connected by the 'internet' port, I think that is true of all routers not just WRT54GL.
Therefore I don't know how to access that with those routers sorry.

One blind person leads the other and we end up with a configuration that doesn't use the WAG54GL as a router at all and therefore any DDWRT firmware features can not be used. Not a good start and really just leads to confusion and ignorance.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

How do I connect the WRT54GL so it can be used as a router?

Well that's not very constructive..

However I don't think the WAG200G supports ppoa half bridge so actually they have the choice of: Double NAT or just using the WRT54GL as a switch and wireless access point. Double NAT is annoying, you have to port forward twice for anything that needs incoming connections eg: torrents, msn file transfers etc.

The third (best) option (unless I'm wrong about the WAG lack of half bridge) is to get an "as new" Dynlink 1320 ADSL2 modem (which does support half bridge) from trademe, they are cheap and plentiful because many ISP's give them out with new plans.

After that it's simple to setup half bridge and effectively offload the routing/etc to the WRT54GL

Yes, WAG200G don't support half bridge mode. Now I have WRT54Gl acting as a switch and wireless access point. What's the advantage of handing DHCP server stuff to the WRT54GL? Can I still use dd-wrt to keep track of bandwidth useage?
