Just received from Vodafone to replace the brown ultrahub. Working OK port forwarding not intuitive but worked it out.

Main problem is I cannot change DNS to use pihole as the option is greyed out. Any way to get round this?

Also VOIP isn't working but I expect they have to enable.

Any hep appreciated.

If you disable DHCP on the Huawei, and enable it in Pihole, I believe you will also be able to configure DNS in Pihole. I don't actually use Pihole, but that's how it works with isc-dhcp.

Now, I wonder if you can help me: Are you able to port forward 443? I get "The configured port conflicts with the internal service port". I assumed the "internal service port" is linked to the VF management stuff, which *might* be defined on the "ACS Configuration" page, but turning off ACS does not make the error message go away.

Odd.

Although I would be interested to know, you can cancel that request -- a better router arrived at my door.

Just disable DHCP and get the Pihole to do DHCP on your network.

Thanks for this - what happens if the pihole server falls over?

Same thing if your router falls over really or if you've got the PiHole configured on your router... But you're able to just login to your router and re-enable DHCP if you're desperate.

We think alike! That's why I used isc-dhcp: it supports failover to another instance. Be warned that it takes more effort to setup. Also, I eventually moved to AdGuard Home from Pihole. There were good reasons at the time, but I can't remember them now :)

I've got round it for the time being by changing DNS to pihole's address on a per device basis but this isn't easy on Android. I'll have a look at your solution. I don't like the sound of a non-router DCHP falling over when I am away from home and the family can't fix.

Have you considered opendns.com? That way you have nothing to install, no box to worry about, and you are using a service that is exceedingly unlikely to go down.

How would this work when I can't change the router's DNS?

I don't know why you don't just get the PiHole to do DHCP.

Disable it on your router (untick Enable Primary DHCP Server), configure on the PiHole and job done...

You're currently doing it the hard way when there isn't any need to do so...

Will have a look, the fear is I am away from home for work a lot and if the pihole server fails then I'll have an unhappy family. There is a higher level password setting in the DN8245X6-10 router which I think is for Vodafone use if I had that password I could probably change DNS on the router. Having said that I can no longer find that option.

Exactly that will happen the way you're doing it now. If you're that worried then just use Adguard DNS: https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

That would definitely be a problem!

The easiest option is probably DHCP on Pihole or Adguard, installed on something reliable and plugged into the same power socket as your router, with instructions to the family that "If the internet stops working, turn this socket off and on again".

Good luck.

Sorry haven't used this router before but are you able to change the upstream DNS of the router's WAN to pihole's IP? DNS requests for this way would look like this -

Client -- > Router -- > Pihole -- > upstream (cloudflare or google)

Instead of this -

Client -- > Pihole --> Upstream.

The only drawback for this setup would be that you won't be able to see stats for individual devices but will only see your router in pihole
