Hi all,

I have recently performed some Internet speedtests on a Thomson TG585 v7 wireless modem/router.

I found that when connecting my laptop to the router using a cat 5 ethernet cable I was achieving download speeds of 14Mbps from www.speedtest.com

However, if I disconnect the cable and connect to the router through the wireless interface my download speed drops back to 5Mbps.

The router's wireless interface is set to 802.11g and the signal strength is "Excellent" (I'm in the same room as the router).  I've tried enabling and disabling WEP encryption, with no discernable difference in speed with either setting.

I realise that cabled ethernet runs at 100Mbps and 802.11g runs at 54Mbps, but as the slowest segment in the network is the ADSL link shouldn't my LAN changes have no impact on the WAN overall speed, especially as the wireless is still about 4 times as fast as the ADSL?

Many thanks for any comments or suggestions

Grant

I'm not entirely sure if the firmware is up to date.  I received the router out of the box new from NZ telecom last week and the on board software version is 7.4.2.7.  However, I have seen a UK version available v7.4.3.2.  I'm not sure how compatible it is with this machine or with my ISP.
