I have an inspiron dell 8200/xp/laptop. I can connect to wrt54gs linksys router thru ethernet but not wirelessly. Other laptops able to connect wirelessly. have rebooted etc. I checked and able to detect networks automatically is checked. Any ideas? thanks!
Presume your using WinXP ? Can you see the SSID for that router if you right click on the Wireless Network Connection in Network Connections and select 'View Available Wireless Networks' ?
Some access points turn off SSID broadcast as an extra security measure which means you need to know the SSID and then create a manual connection to it, which is what the other laptop users may have done.
Another reason is that your laptop doesnt support the wireless protocol - 802.11g or encryption standard that the router is configured for possibly WPA2..
You're right, my laptop is older and supports wireless protocol 802.11b. I reset my router, manually set up the SSID by entering the 192.168.1.1 in the internet address etc, went to network places and viewed the workgroup, changed the name from MSHOME and designated the SSID/workgroup name and it WORKED! THanks so much
