You can't run the full version of DD-WRT just the micro.

Ok then and Will that be worthwhile?
Will it reduce drops?

sbiddle is correct you will only be able to run DD-WRT micro because the WRT54G v5 only has 8MB or ram and 2MB of flash memory instead of 16MB ram and 4 MB of flash like a GL or others in the series.

See here for the spec's for each version:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series

Here is a comparison of the features of the different versions of DD-WRT

It totally depends what you want to install DD-WRT for.

As for "drops" what sort of drops are you talking about?

What i want is reliable wireless router.
I have been told that the linksys wrt54g is a decent router and that if you install dd-wrt it will be more reliable
I have had problems with router reliabilty. Mainly them crashing often and having to restart them

The WT54G or WRT54GL with DD-WRT are very reliable.

Without knowing exactly what your issues are or the cause of them DD-WRT may or may not solve the problem.

Personally I wouldn't get one of the version 5 ones. I'd go for a WRT54GL version or a V1-3 of the 54G that can have the full version of DD-WRT loaded.

You still haven't explained what your issue is though. If for example you're locking up your router trying to use P2P software with way too many concurrent connections then this problem could still occur running DD-WRT.

My issue was that the router would just go down when surfing the net, playing games on xbox360 etc. I think it was just a crap router adn I want a good 1
