I have the Thomson TG585 v7 modem which came when I signed up for ADSL with Telecom. Alot of programs, especially those that need to log onto the internet before really operating (to check for updates etc) seem to stall, and when I get a error message its generally something about low or no internet connectivity. I have 3 different computers with different OS, etc, all suffer the same problems on the same programs. And when I connect my laptop to a different network, I have no problems, so Im pretty sure its the modem/router.

Ive poked around it a bit, and found the firewall setting which is already disabled, but Im sure its something like that. Im pretty sure Ive eliminated any other possibilities.

Im sure this has happened to lots of people, any help would be great.

Thanks.

Hi, I presume you checked there is no blocked ports in the router, cannot remember where you find it in the ST but I would check that.

As an aside, it still does have a firewall by virtue of the NAT router and the fact that outside connections cannot be initiated unless port forwarding allows it. The part that is disabled is the SPI firewall which I normally recommend is off if possible as this can slow some routers, although the current crop of chipsets on 25Mb/s limited links (ie ADSL2+ etc) are not likely to find SPI a hardship.

Hi Cyril-

Thanks for getting back to me. Forgive me if these follow up questions are too basic, Im not all that familiar with configuring routers.

One of the applications Im using does require open ports, specifically 9896 and 16000-16999.

While the firewall is (and had been) disabled I found this in the modem/router 'Toolbox' that seems to deal with ports.

'Assigned Games & Applications

Click on 'Unassign' to disable a game or a application or use the last row in the table to assign a game or application to a local network device.

If the game or the application you are looking for does not exist, click here to create it (you will be asked for game or application details).'

It asks for 5 things:

1. Protocol - Can select 'Any' from dropdown box.

2. Port Range - Presumably I just enter in the port ranges

3. Translate to - No idea what to enter here, its a text box

4. Trigger Protocl - Can select 'Any' from dropdown box.

5. Trigger Port - No idea what to enter here, its a text box

Am I looking in the right place? And what should I put in for the 'Translate to' and 'Trigger Port'. I tried leaving them blank and that didnt work.

Thanks again for any help.

Hi yes you are looking in the right places, but in general normal applications dont need port forwarding, however games do, maybe you could PM me what apps you are dealing with.

Hi Thronsen

Lets try to get basic things working before working out how to forward ports to one of your PCs. Since you implied that nothing is working except the configuration page of the router, I want to know if your router is logging into internet, ie does it say the ADSL status is online and PPP session is up? If no PPP, you need to check the username and password is correct and been entered in the format specified by your ISP. I presume you already did that but its worth checking. I think the Thompson router does save settings when you click "apply" on each page, but its also worth checking for any option like "save" or "reboot" an the tools menu, or just switch it off for 20 seconds and see if it works ok after that.

DSL also is shown by a light on the front, and if its blinking then you have a problem with the ADSL line so start by checking that its not filtered (only the phones should be filtered) and that same thing happens on other phone jacks.

If everything works except a game or special software, then "translate to" would be the port on the destination computer, requiring a static IP on your LAN. Those ports look more like VoIP (I assume its that), which is normally configured for a direct connection with any ALG functions off. This allowes your VoIP software to send keep-alive traffic directly to the server, so the router will keep waiting for replies (which get forwarded back to your VoIP device, keeping the port open). If your VoIP software looks like it should be working, try turning off the routers ALG function or turning off your software's firewall functions. Otherwise you would need to forward those ports to your VoIP device, and allocate it with a static IP. I think the thompson can allocate static IP based on the device's MAC address, otherwise you must set the device to an address that wont be used by other computers.

Time to find a new industry!
