Current setup:

wall socket <----> ADSL Modem (DSL 502T) <----> Genius 8 port switch <----> PCs & subsequent 8 port switch & DSE XH9948 Wireless 4 port WLAN router

ADSL modem has DHCP on
Wireless router has DHCP off

ADSL modem is at 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
Wireless router won't/can't reside at 10.1.1.XXX so is on 10.1.2.1 255.255.0.0 (originally 192.168.1.2)

everything down wind of the ADSL router can see the rest of the networkand internet (printers and PCs) except for the wireless devices.

I would like to make sure that all the network here can see each other and have wireless devices see the internal network and the internet.

How should this be set up?

I've tried the connecting the wireless router using the WAN port as well as

ADSL <----> Switch <----->Wireless router via ethernet not WAN port
and
ADSL <----> Wireless router via WAN port<-----> Switch <----> rest of network

what am I doing wrong?

Hi, dont connect the Wireless router via the WAN port use one of the LAN ports.

You state you did this in the 2nd to last diagram, but obviously something else was not right. But for windows shares to be seen you cannot stick a NAT router in the middle. The Wireless routers LAN admin access access address only needs to be accessible if you need to administer it, otherwise as a layer2 device is should just pass all ethernet frams on the lan that it should.

One solution:
<502T> ---<DSE router> ---- <switch>

502T connected up to the DSE WAN port.
Settings in the 502T:
DHCP on
IP 10.0.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

DSE router settings:
WAN port - Dynamic IP (provided by 502T)
LAN IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP on

So the DSE router assigns IPs for all the computers on the network. Disadvantages of this is that you're performing 2x NAT. See if this works for you.

I think (thought) it should be that way, but if I use the wireless connection (192.168.1.1 or 10.1.2.1) I don't get access to the printer at 10.1.1.8

I've tried having two IP addresses for this computer (macintosh)

10.1.1.5 <---> ethernet <----> switch <----> ADSL

and

192.168.1.99 <--->802.1 <----> wireless router <----> switch <---> ADSL

but only the internet works via ethernet, and the printer (10.1.1.8) can't be seen from the wireless side

the windows machines see addresses only from the network they're on

your subnet masks dont look right to me. Why are you using a /16 and a /24? Any ideas on why your wireless router wont let you use an ip in the same range?

If there is something strange with the wireless maybe try changing your mask to 255.255.254.0 and see if that makes a difference although it does seem a bit odd to me.

The default for 10.X.X.X range is 255.0.0.0, which is wide open but should not be an issue. Set all subnets for that and see how it goes, but essentially if you dont have the NAT router of the Wireless unit in circuit then it should all be visible, assuming subnets are all the same.

I think you are using the wireless router strictly as an access point if I have understood you correctly. If so, you shouldnt need anything plugged into the WAN port on it. Just give it a different address that is in a different range that doesnt conflict with the rest of the network and then it should let you assign the right ip/mask to the LAN side.

this was with static ip setup on wireless, DHCP enabled on ADSL modem and disabled on Wireless router

Set the WAN on your DSE router to another totally different address range (e.g. 192.168.1.x) because you won't be using it. Connect your DSE router to the switch via the LAN port only as Cyril says. Then you can set the LAN address of the DSE router to a spare static IP address in the 10.1.1.x range so you can administer it when necessary.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the ideas, though frankly non of them are seeming to work, and now everyone is back in the office I can't really keep dicking with the network any more today

I now have things set up like this...

ADSL          <--> Switch <--> wireless
10.1.1.1        <--Switch-->      wireless 10.1.1.2
DHCP on                                 DHCP on
10.1.1.11-10.1.1.98              10.1.1.101-10.1.1.254

PCs hardwired are assigned manual addresses in range 10.1.1.3 to 10.1.1.10

still no access for wireless devices to internet but feeling more hopeful :-)

Ahhh, I would remove the DHCP server on the wireless, othewise the clients will be given the wrong gateway and fall over. As an experiment purhaps, set one of the wireless clients on static IP 10.1.1.30 for now with the gateway 10.1.1.1, does it see all.

DLink:

DHCP Range: 10.1.1.3 - 10.1.1.x

DSE:

WAN IP: Whatever (not used)
LAN IP: 10.1.1.2
DHCP: Disable

The wireless unit has two options for the subnet: 255.255.255.0 and 255.255.0.0

Not sure I really need more than 254 addresses so 255.255.255.0 seems OK, and is the default for both the routers in this scenario

I can't find a way to access an interface for the switch to do the port switching you suggest.

or should I loop the DSE wireless router back to the ethernet switch?

ADSL <--> DSE WLAN <--> Switch <--> DSE WLAN

there is only one RJ45 port on the DLink so I can "only" chain one router from it, and then the other router from one of the available LAN ports on the router previous on the chain.

ADSL port <--> 8 Port switch <--> 4 port wireless WLAN router

or

ADSL port <--> 4 port wireless WLAN router <--> 8 Port switch

Currently address changes aside, I can't make either of these two options share the whole network with devices connected to either the wireless router and the switch.

I'm trying to be as clear as I can in my issue descriptions because I'm not a network wizard and I might need more insight to resolve this than it appears {I'm not as clever as I think}

Each device only needs to be connected to the "network" once, just pretend the switch is a dumb extension of the lan ports available
