At least once a day my router jams up and I have to unplug the modem and router for it to work again. Every morning when I wake up my internet connection is jammed and no one in the house can use the WI FI untill I wake up. This is a huge issue for my house hold and I would like to fix it. I thought about buying a new router, but I get a feeling that someone on here can help me save a ton of money.

Specs:

Router: Netgear 180Mbps Wireless Firewall Router WGT624 v2
Modem: Motorola MSTATEA
ISP: AT&T DSL Elite package 6mbps (does not even get close to 4mbps)

I've looked in the netgear settings and can't find anything that I am familiar with to solve this problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Btw I've upgraded the firmware for both devices already.

I'll take a guess and say you're doing a lot of torrenting? If so reduce the number of connections that you're using. Odds are the CPU of the router of choking under the load.

Nice guess, but not quite. Why does it keep jamming? I read someone elses posts with your replies and you said something about going into the settings to speed things up? How can I do this?

Probably easiest just to buy a new router...they have a nasty habit of just crapping out. I'm sure it's happened to most of us at some point.

Does it matter which kind I buy? I dont have any 5 ghz network cards in my house. I guess I'll just buy whatever looks good. Leaving to the store after I take a shower.

Ive had a bad run with ones for customers lately.. They either get overloaded and crash or they overheat and crash.. Got one here right now which is working perfect for me but for my customer as soon as 3-4 users logged on it would crash - upto 7-8 times a day!

I just bought a cisco valet router for $108.. there was also a cisco e1000 for $60 and they pretty much seem the same by specs. should i exchange this one? seriously i think i just got ripped off. lol.

Routers (in general) don't just stop working. My routers stay up for months here at home. The only exception was an old Belkin router that would slowdown terribly due to too many connections created by torrent downloads (hence sbiddle's question).

I am currently using a Cisco Small Business Pro router and it's working well. My previous router was a Cisco Linksys with DD-WRT firmware and never had a problem.

If you are not using torrents (or if you are you have limited the number of connections), then I'd think the router is having either a power source problem or overheating. Either way probably just best to replace it.

If you don't need WiFi N, then I'd say get a Linksys WRT54GL, install DD-WRT and you should have a very good performance router.

Everyone I know who has a wireless router has had at least one just stop working properly or all together. There might not be a reason but it does happen and you just have to buy a new one.

It's not lying over the air vent ports? if it's a netgear, it might be better to stand it up vertically, as horizontally it covers the bottom airvents and overheats, had a similar problem with my DG2000 left lying down, put feed on it and works fine now :)
