Hi,

I currently have a home network set up with a Dynalink RTA1320 modem router.  I'm wanting to add wireless access to the network.  I was looking for wireless access points and found them to be a bit scare and expensive, but then I read that I can use a wireless router as an access point.  This would be preferable to me as it has the advantage of having 4 ethernet ports included which would be useful.

So my first question is whether than info is correct.  Can I add a wireless router to my network and use it to add wireless access?

Assuming I can I would be interested in any recommendations for good routers.  I'm looking at the cheaper end of the market.  The main ones I've been looking at are:

Linksys WRT120
ASUS RT-N10
TP-LINK TL-WR740N
Netgear WNR1000

Can anyone recommend one of these, or another in the same price range (up to $100)?  Is there any reason to avoid models with internal antennas or are they just as good as external antennas?

Thanks for your help
Andrew

Yes, that's correct. Just get something that supports the dd-wrt firmware, put it into router mode instead of gateway mode, and it will work as a switch/wap. I use a DLink DIR-615, which has wireless N, it works fine.

The DD-WRT website has good instructions on how to get it onto the router, and how to set it up to do the different things.

Hi, I have used all manner of models, the DIR-615 that timmmay uses is not a bad unit, infact for using as just an AP I would leave it on the lattest Dlink firmware it seems to run just fine. Other models I have used a bit lately include the TPLink WR740N, again seems to run just fine on stock firmware should you not be bothered doing the DD-WRT thing.

Ive had issues with my DIR-615 that were partially corrected with a firmware upgrade but its still pretty unreliable.

Stick with Linksys (Cisco) and you wont have any problems at all.

Try dd-wrt. It takes about 5 minutes to install, and some settings are retained, but resetting it is a good idea. The guide page has three ways to do it, I chose the simplest and it worked fine - download the "first install from stock" firmware.

My DIR-615 has been generally fine.
