Hi there

I've got an imate Pocket PC Phone Edition, which I've had for a while now. However, the other day I went and bought myself a new Toshiba m400 Tablet PC, which comes with a Bluetooth stack, and I'm trying to get them connected.

Unfortunately, I'm not having much joy, Toshiba supplies their own Bluetooth software with the m400, and won't let you use Windows' one (from what I can see) - and while this can detect my imate, it insists on keeping it as a modem and not allowing me to simply set up a serial port.

I was hoping someone else may have tried setting up ActiveSync with these two devices (or any other Toshiba notebook/tablet that uses Toshiba's own Bluetooth stack) and could let me know the steps involved.

Thanks very much :)

John

John, check our Bluetooth Guides. While we don't have one with the Toshiba software, you will see that it's actually simple:

- on your PC define an incoming (often called server) COM port
- on your PC configure ActiveSync to accept serial connections on this COM port
- if your devices are already paired delete the pairing
- create the pairing again from your Pocket PC

If this is the old i-mate Pocket PC then you might have to execute the Bluetooth applet in the Settings menu, because it will reset the ActiveSync control, allowing you to mark the new pairing as the ActiveSync pairing.

We have a Bluetooth Guide with the i-mate Pocket PC Phone screenshots in it.

Thanks very much! You were right - I didn't realise there was a specific Bluetooth COM port tool in Control Panel. For anyone else with the same problem (since it's a bit ambiguous):

Go to the Bluetooth Local COM utility in Control Panel. Note down which of the listed COM ports is set to owner="LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort[Toshiba LocalCOM]".]
Go into ActiveSync on the PC, go to File > Connection Settings, tick the 'Allow connections to one of the following', and select that COM port from the list. Click OK.
Set your Pocket PC to discoverable.
Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the system tray on the PC, and choose Add New Connection.
Step through the wizard. It will insist you create a dial-up networking connection - just do this, even if you don't plan on using it.
Once that's done, on your Pocket PC, go Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth Settings and click the Start button. Click OK when it tells you to start pairing.
Then go into ActiveSync on your Pocket PC, and click Tools > Connect via Bluetooth. Hopefully it should now work!

Cheers
