i've just bought a new vaio-ar laptop with xp-media centre/sp 2. Setting things up, got to my bluetooth settings when things started to go terribly wrong.

It has Toshiba integrated bluetooth, i had problems detecting devices, followed advice on several threads, none of which worked. having followed the information available i've uninstalled the toshiba stuff and installed the latest windcomm. one problem, i have no generic radio now.All that happens now is i get the little blue/red icon in the icon tray and when i right click it says bluetooth device not found.

i've tried googling the web, but all i got was either a list of the radios available or dead links.

Any help, hints, suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have used the Widcomm software, and lately I have a Bluetooth adapter with Toshiba software. It works well, perhaps not as intuitive as the Widcomm, but it does the job.

I am afraid the Widcomm software may not work with your specific hardware though...

i've just tried to re-install the toshiba bluetooth stack. However, when it comes to installing the drivers it prompts me to insert device and click ok. However, i don't have an external device, and i presume i should not need one as my laptop has an "integrated camera, wireless LAN, microphone and Bluetooth for full spectrum communications." (I'm hoping that this means it is not just a bluetooth ready type and i should not need an external adapter to install the toshiba driver.)

So all i can do is click cancel and set-up closes without installing any of the drivers. Software has been installed but is obviously useless. If i try and access bluetooth settings or information exchanger set-up starts up again and tries installing the drivers.Very annoying.

It maybe that its a newer version of the stack (4. something) that i'm now trying to install than that which my laptop came with in the first place?

And still no sign of that damned generic bluetooth radio :(

I guess you are installing the latest Bluetooth software from the Toshiba website? It should work fine. When asked to plug the device, press the Function key that turns Bluetooth on/off. You might have to press Fn-[key] to activate it.

brilliant. That did the trick. still twisting my head as to why it works but at least it does now :)
