Hi All,

Looking for some advice. I have been searching on Amazon and there are some great looking keyless smart locks (deadlocks, not door handle) for the house front door (e.g. the Schlage ones https://www.amazon.com/Schlage-Connect-BE469NX-Touchscreen-Deadbolt/dp/B00AGK9KOG/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1509657957&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=smart+lock)

However I understand from other threads on Geekzone these don't work/are not compliant in NZ because the zwave ranges are not supported. Also hubs like Samsung Hub are not available here to connect to.

Also I saw Nest and Yale doing a keyless lock which looks like it should work in NZ, but not available until 2018! https://www.shopyalehome.com/LinusLock so no help there.

My ideal is:

Keyless entry using programmable key pad
connectivity allow logging and reporting of PIN attempts and lock/unlock times by PIN
Ability to lock or unlock remotely ideally using an internet connected smartphone (i.e. not only when on the same network, but remotely also)
Compliant or at least works with full functionality in NZ today

If anyone can shed some light I'd like to know the lock and hub combination that works, and your experiences.

this one is my personal favourite Yale ZWave deadlock.

This works in NZ, it even works with morepork alarms so you can pair it to that and have it disarm your alarm when a pin is entered.

I really dont recommend the yale lock with a handle aswell, I bought that, and within 5 minutes of installing it, it broke. turning the handle, while it was locking == broken device. I had it set to auto lock after 30 seconds, and hence why i was turning the handle and then it began operating. so I would stay away from that one. but the deadlock i mentioned is great. been using them for 2 years now.

I'm not a big fan of the bluetooth style ones, like the august etc, since if you have no phone or anything on you, you need a key. with the yale one, you can still open it with a phone if you want, but all you have to do is enter a pin code. this is really helpful for tradies, kids etc, just give them their own codes.

Bunnings sell the Schlage, Yale and Samsung locks.

Bunnings Locks

With the Yale locks, i'd prefer the 'keyed' version so in Battery failure/any technical glitches, you're not locked out.

Yes bunnings sell the Yale locks, but if you want the zwave module, I found it cheaper just to buy from activeautomation. bunnings lock + zwave module is more expensive than buying together.

but if you dont want the zwave module, then bunnings is cheaper.

You could always integrate your door locking with an access control / alarm / automation system (ICT WX for example), can have prox reader, prox reader / keypad combo, all controlling whatever lock suits the door (emortice lock, v lock, mag lock etc) remote access to server to control functions, logging, all sorts of stuff. Possibly overkill for 1 door but would future proof for significant amount of expansion / customisation down the track

@chimera - thanks for the suggestion. I am not sure I have the time or capability to 'wifi' it manually though! will need something more 'off the shelf' I'm afraid.

August locks work here and being bluetooth there are no zWave issues unless you go for the new Pro model.

If you add in the IP gateway then they can integrate with other services.

The $400 and something on that says zwave (one I linked to) cones with the nz/au zwave module. Cheaper one does not.

Once it has a zwave module and paired with hub, then yes you can remotely lock/unlock it. Aswell as notifications as to when it was locked/unlocked.

Regarding hubs. Depending what you want. Secuirty system I would suggest morepork. Home automation, for basic/easier k would got with a vera edge (from active automation), or for more flexibility I would get a USB zwave stick and use openhab on a PC or raspberry pi.

My personal setup is morepork and Yale locks on alarms. Vera lite (older model than vera edge) for zwave stuff (curtains and a few motion sensors) and openhab on a virtual.machine for the rules (openhab can work with vera)

Looks like I would need to purchase a separate keypad to get the PIN entry which is really what I want. I think i'd prefer an all in one unit. Thanks for the suggestion though, looks like a good option for a lot of people.

Thanks for that. The Vera Edge looks like it should do nicely for me at the moment. At some point i might invest more time and get into openhab and make a real go of it, for now i'll stick to off the shelf capabilities and components though.

I can only imagine the HA industry will explode in the next 12 months. With so many houses to build in NZ there should be a concerted effort to make them HA ready from the outset (things like cabling throughout, even basic HA as part of the fit-out). I know it would make a house a lot more attractive to me!

I'm having trickle deciding on a smart lock that integrates well with home assistant.

Does anyone know if i can buy a usa yale lock and add an nz zwave module?

The other option would be to buy a usa lock with zigbee and add a zigbee usb stick but there aren't many posts about integrating Yale zigbee locks into home assistant.

I rang yale nz, and they said that the Yale assure lock they sold in nz only came with zigbee as an optional module and they didn't have it with zwave yet?

Also: where is the best place to buy a zwave usb stick if i go that way. $120 seems fairly pricey for ausb stick.
