Many of my mates want to do Home Automation but as there are so many devices that only talk to set controllers etc, they are worried about starting and after spending hundreds of dollars, getting locked in the wrong path.

So they are waiting for ME to finish my Home Automation system and copy it :) (and not repeat the mistake I make)

But I was wondering if anyone know of any Wellington base Home Automation support groups or clubs.

You can only find out so much on google, and would be cool, to see or hear about what other people are doing with their own Home Automation.

I have gone down the Hubitat Elevation path for the controller and its working fine with the Z-wave (curtains) and zigbee (lights) controllers I am using so far, but there is so much more you can do with Home Automation and looking for ideas etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of any groups\clubs?

I hadn't heard of the Hubitat Elevation  - is it good to work with? I'm still using Home Assistant but am finding it a bit frustrating at the moment with the constant breaking changes between upgrades and the push to using their own pricey cloud service.

As for support groups, I found a group on Meetup but they haven't met since November last year: https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/Wellington-Home-Automation-Hackers/ Perhaps you could start there and try to get it going again.

You can view the videos of previous speakers. Hopefully some more to come soon.

Hah, snap! I've had a chat to Jethro, he is lining up some more meetings but needs speakers. Pipe up if you're keen. If you speak about your setup or intended setup, however basic, the audience can help with suggestions.

It would be cool even if there was just a 'meet up' at a bar were everyone could come together and talk about their setups/plans and swap ideas. No need for a key speaker.

I have just joined that meetup group.

Got my basic setup working (light and curtains controlled) and now looking at adding more (its very addictive).
Looking at IP cameras and other options.

I think @scottjpalmer needs to do a talk.  That'll kick things off.  Also there's a slack channel (linked from that page) where there can be some discussion on various aspects.  It has quietened some what but there are some active people on there.

I don't think there's right or wrong path at the moment. if you're using vendors and not building something 100% yourself, there's always a chance that vendor will discontinue the line/products/support for device/etc

Looks at nest that google wants to discontinue, a lot of smart devices on the market now, that does not mean they will be supported for a long time. I would design the system for the easy swap set-up in mind. Or at least have an option to extend and add other vendor devices to the system without doing much of a change to the entire ecosystem.

Thus, I would look at 3rd party controllers eg. home assistant to be a center hub. You can still use vendor hubs to communicate to devices, but you still keep the ability to maintain everything once vendor shuts down as everything can be hooked up to home assistant in parallel. For that I would buy stand alone z-wave and zigbee bridges. Buy online devices that have ability to work with home assistant if required/etc

I have many mi home + broadlink + sonoff + google home devices that can communicate using their own servers or via home assistant :) even if google shuts down and xiaomi goes bankrupt, I will be able to switch on the lights in bedroom remotely, or run complex automations: like home detection and trigger music, lights, alarm off, etc
