Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on where to start when looking to buy a home security kit? There seems to be so many options available... any recommendations on considerations other than image quality, storage and alerting options?

Are you referring to cameras? Smart sensors? Smart Alarms? Smart Door Locks?

Thanks both.

I am thinking cameras, sensors, alarm and monitoring with the flexibility to move kit if I move property or want to move them around the property.

I havent thought of smart locks aswell. its more when I am away from the property to keep an eye on it and be alerted as and when.

There seems to be so many brands/choices and then there seems to be so much kit that could be purchased as well.

Thats a very broad requirement covering all of those things.
In saying this one brand that does all? - You want to look at something like a Panasonic security system

Lots of smart cameras nowadays negate the need some of the other bits.

I've wondered whether they actually mitigate anything or it is simply evidence collecting to enable follow up action, have you or heard any experiences on this point? No worries if not and thanks again.

The Arlo kits seem popular.

I think a number of those kits (and ring doorbells etc) allow 2 way communication - so I guess if you have motion detection turned on then your phone app will alert you if someone is\has broken in and you can use push to talk to tell a burglar to p*ss off - there are a few funny youtube videos of this in action if you search for them.

Have not had any personal experience with them though.

Nice one and thank you. I'll check them out. Arlo certainly appears to cater for monitoring and alerting to device and appears less intrusive - whether that is good or bad.

Yeah I saw a bit of noise about the eufy's too, and how good the battery life on them is. The free cloud storage from Netgear is hard to ignore, but I guess the SD card support on the eufy kits make up for it.

Go to your local SPCA shelter and ask if they've got anything in the doberman, german shepherd, staffie, boerboel line. Buy plenty of dog food at the same time, and make sure your property is fenced.

I'm almost convinced to purchase Eufy Cam (pros: SD card + 365-day battery + video quality). I'm thinking of purchasing one to start with. There is a deal on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GS585SX/?tag=slickdeals09-20&ascsubtag=8566a62e285d11ea96049aec81e22f080INT). After coupon savings, USD$119 for 1x eufyCam E and the home base station (Region a)). The shipping cost, including GST, is approximately NZD70. Roughly NZD250. The downside of importing a unit from the USA is no warranty in NZ. The power adapter can work with 110v - 240v. Wifi region A seems not to be a problem (channel 14 won't work. I suppose that if I configure my wifi router to a specific channel, I should be fine). Any other thing that I need to be aware of? Or any suggestion to talk me out of this option :) Thank you.

One general observation, anything wireless that doesn't use 802.11 is going to be full of security holes, and even when it uses a known standard like 802.11 s often horribly vulnerable, e.g. Wifi de-auth and then Pineapple it. Depends on what level of attack you're expecting, I have wired everything because then I don't have to worry about someone sitting across the street remotely disabling the sensors and alarm before breaking in at their leisure.

I have just started to roll out wyze cams. Got them from Amazon and also got the motion sensors and door sensors.
