Right. I'm hoping to buy a 32GB 2nd Generation [currently up to 3rd] for various reasons.
None are for sale in New Zealand, since around September last year when the 3rd generation were released.

I've been around to most retail stores asking if they have any returned/open-box stock, but none do.
JB had two in the system, but the manager said he was planning on writing them off as stolen stock for some reason.

SO: I've turned to the internet. So far, I'm tossing up either buying new stock from Amazon.com [with Amazon themselves as the seller] and having to use one of those US-address services like Shipito or BuyUSA, or buying from Ebay where I don't have any faith in their "new stock" or "replacement I got from Apple".

I've looked on Trademe, but I'm not keen to a) compete and b) trust 2nd-hand stock.

Tl;dr version: what's better, Amazon or Ebay, and what's the best shipping method?

Pricewise: I'm more likely to buy from Amazon themselves for peace-of-mind, but there's a USD$199 Touch on ebay for the next three days.

Don't quite trust refurb stock. Rather go from new with no scratches or bangs. It's not like a car where you can get someone certified to inspect it.

The legitimate answer would have to be. . .better battery life [rated as six hours more than 3rd gen, 14hours over 1st gen].

Illegitimate answer would be so I can personalise it more :D *winkwink*

Didn't know the battery life side of things, and in terms of jailbreaking you can talk about that here, and the 3rd Gen will be able to be properly jailbroken in a few months once the next series of mobile devices are released.

You do know if the 2nd Gen has the latest firmware it too can't have a untethered jailbreak either as far as im aware, not until the new jailbreak is out just like with the 3rd Gen

It is still possible to run older versions of the firmware, isn't it? It's not a compulsory do-or-die like the PS3 update, where certain features are cut off without the update?
I'd be more than happy running older versions.

And yeah, I had no idea about the difference in battery life until I'd seen it on Wikipedia.

It's quite a relief knowing it's not so taboo here :)

I wouldn't recommend getting a 2g. They have only half as much ram as the 3g, the processor is slower and the new iPhone OS 4 won't have multitasking compatibility for 2nd gen(although you could jailbreak and use backgrounder and proswitcher or something).

Ipod refurbs are processed by apple, so they prety much are certified to inspect them!
Ive purchased two ipods thru their refurb programme, and been very happy with them. My first one had a tiny scratch and I doubt anyone wouldve been able to tell the difference from new with my second one.

Yes if you run the old firware then you will be fine, not sure if you bought a 2nd Gen new whether or not it would have the new firmware, it would depend where you got it from

You can downgrade the firmware but other parts of the ipod software that are upgraded when you update the firmware are sometimes not able to be downgraded with the firmware and these are often the bits that fix security holes that allow for things like jailbreaks. Just a word of warning.

Hi - seems the Spirit jailbreak is pretty effective (obviously I can't vouch for it being 100%) - my son used it last night to jb his 3rd gen iPod Touch & it all went well (previously he'd used Blackra1n for a tethered jb). I'd also suggest that the faster processor & extra RAM would be useful for some of the new graphics-intensive apps.... and I guess it wouldn't hurt that the battery would be a few months newer (even if it's being worked harder by the processor it may possibly be 'fresher').

Yeah the new spirit jailbreak can jailbreak all released devices so if you want to jailbreak use that
