Good morning.

I am looking for a Project Management position within the ICT sector of New Zealand as I believe that I have the necessary knowledge to be of value in such a position. I plan on moving to New Zealand via the skilled Migrant Visa Program.

I come from a background of electronic hardware testing, software testing, which has led to me managing small to medium SDLC projects. The results of the last project I managed have enabled international remittance payments to be made directly to a smart card system in Ghana and was recently featured in a Dutch online newspaper here:

Even though I am currently in Saudi Arabia, I will be leaving for home in South Africa very soon then I will travel to New Zealand in search for a position. As background for you, I had coffee with a recruitment firm that got me my job and is one of the biggest in Wellington. She told me a good, senior project manager took six months to find a contract recently. The contract market is apparently awful. I don't know about permanent work. I suggest you do good research before you move to NZ, and get in touch with a good firm like Beyond Recruitment. Also look on Seek and Trademe Jobs.

Indeed I have been doing some work to understand the job market of NZ. And yes I do understand that it can be a lengthy process. More worryingly from what I have found, the NZ job market is highly reliant on personal acquaintances. And this is the reason why I am going to NZ for a month long trip.

My experiences with NZ recruitment agencies has shown that they are hardly prepared to entertain a foreign candidate unless...

1. The candidate has a valid work visa or
2. The candidate is willing to be in NZ for a face to face discussion regarding the position.

I am trusting on a positive outcome from this journey I have started. Ive been wanting to move to NZ for some time now and this is the time to do it.

Being a smaller place there may be something to "who you know", but I got my role without any connections and I hired people recently that a recruitment company send through. If you have unique skills and are clearly the best person for a role I don't think visas will be a big issue, though I suspect if there's someone who already has the right to work here, citizens and such, they have to be considered first. It's never come up though, when we were hiring and one candidate was overseas we assessed them purely on their merits.
