Selling ice to eskimos is the polar opposite of excellent customer service.

The topic seems a distance from the actual content of this thread to me. I thought you were trying to offer IT Services to IT Companies.

To be fair, if you can't find a website without help, you aren't going to be much use to an IT Company, in any position!

I'm quite capable of finding a website. I wanted to see if this newbie would disclose what it was; but he hasn't returned yet.

There was another thread like this one a while back: the brand new user claimed that the company website was under construction or down for maintenance (can't remember which it was), which seemed a bit fishy.

To me this is a euphemism for a product or service which is unsaleable.

"Please Do Not Take Sales Peoples Advice"

One of the best and most accurate things I've ever learned in IT.. for several reasons :-P

@achieveitinfo: Our IT business needs an individual who can "sell ice to an eskimo, is passionate about learning and delivering excellent customer service."

@roobarb: Selling ice to eskimos is the polar opposite of excellent customer service.

@MichaelNZ: To me this is a euphemism for a product or service which is unsaleable.

I think the standard use of the idiom is "the ability to persuade people to go against their own best interests". It's not that ice is an unsellable commodity, but that an eskimo doesn't need to pay for it, having so much of it just "laying around". So even if you define "sales" as "customer service", roobarb is correct - selling people things they don't need is not excellent customer service.

BTW, roobarb - I see what you did there: ice, eskimo, polar opposite...
