Hi all,

I had worked as a wordpress developer for over 3 years at a design agency. I've learned HTML, CSS and JS (but mostly with jQuery). The job was related to managing digital tickets from clients, once they made a request to change some design on their Wordpress site or upload their products I had to visually accomplish their demands and got back to them. I also had to create and customise themes from the scratch if the client wanted us to make a specific Wordpress for them. So I could learn to generate PHP page templates.

So my skill set is mostly front end side and I would like to get my career going with front end development. But, it seems like in nz most software/web companies/agencies are looking for an experienced developer who is proficient with all most of stacks from back end to front end. If it's a front end job they require Angular and React for sure. I taught myself and built personal React side projects but they are not really commercial experience.

I admit that I took the wrong step at the first place, I don't see any bright side with Wordpress developer and now with this experience nobody in the current job market gave me a glance at all. When applying for front end developer jobs in nz this Wordpress developer experience gave me nothing good advantages and maybe even produce a worse impression to hiring people.

I wonder how to get a chance to start a front end developer in nz and get me out of the Wordpress developer. I am ready to take a entry role, which almost impossible to find one in nz though.. Please give me your experienced advice and that would be really a gold to me!

WordPress isn't averse to 'modern' JS/front-end dev have you used the WP-API at all?

Have you setup a CI deployment pipeline for WP? Ever use roots.io/sage?

The job ads are more often than not a wish list, very rarely will a candidate tick all the boxes. Show them a live project you made with vanilla JS, show them a project you made with React + API. Show them you know how to use git. Show them you're a WordPress developer and not just a WordPress designer and that will get you somewhere.

What is your aim long term? Also what sort sort of incoming are you hoping to learn now and in the future. I am just wondering why you are restricting yourself to wordpress.

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, no experience with the skills you have mentioned. When I built a theme we started with default themes like Twenty Sixteen. I didn't have chance to use roots.io/sage.

Ideally I would like to experience front end and back end development so based on my skills I would like to become a front end developer at the moment. While I had free time I took online courses from Udemy and learned Node, Express, MongoDB, Webpack, Bootcamp courses, and React & redux. They are not like commercial experience and I exercised coding by making simple React side projects. But as I said before these are not commercial experience and hiring people are always looking for senior front end role.. And to be a front end developer with these Node related tech stacks, my Wordpress experience is not helping at all. I feel like some people even see Wordpress as a web development tool, more like assuming as a blogging CMS with simple installations.

I wonder if I am taking the right path now, it's quite confusing.
