Hey guys, I'm not tech in any way or form so would appreciate any guidance/advice!

The old bugger dropped his iPhone the other day - pretty sure its a 3 (he can't even remember) but the screen is cracked now and the touch screen doesn't work anymore!

So what is the most logical way to fix the problem?

TIA!

If he's got contents insurance this may be covered by it. Take to a repair shop (as suggested above) or to the retail store where it was purchased to be sent away for a quote.

Awesome we will take it in to get fixed! Anyone have a basic idea of how much it would cost for repair?

lots !

Evaluate the benefits of claiming contents insurance vs paying for a repair vs upgrading the phone.
Ring / search around, theres plenty of providers who will replace the screens.

Correct. Using insurance may reduce the no claims discount, as well as cost you something (the excess). Check prices and may be buying a new one is the same or just a bit more than repairing this - in which case you get a new warranty as well.

There are offers on TradeMe for glass replacement $70 on 3G and 3GS. Bear in mind there could be more wrong with it.

I had an Iphone 4 repaired by PB tech, have had no problems with it, it cost $120 but that was a retina display model so Iphone 3 might be cheaper.

At the moment refurb Iphone 3GS are gonig for $299 ever second day on 1 day sites.
