I was looking at buying an iphone from the apple online store (i have already have a way of getting it here).
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=3587D031&node=home/shop_iphone/family/iphone

But I noticed it said something about a 2 year AT&T contract. Does that mean if i buy it from the US apple store can i unlock it straight away and use it on vfnz or do i need to pay some sort off disconnection fee?

If you buy from Apple there is no contract setup with AT&T so no disconnect fee. However:
1) They might not sell you one unless you have a US credit card.
2) The current firmware, as far as I know, cannot yet be unlocked.

A couple of forums for current unlocking information:

2) http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=103

As long as you have a US address to ship it to it does not matter where your credit card was issued. I purchased a refurbished unit from Apple about 2 mnths ago and paid with a westpac credit card.

I have an address sorted now I just need to wait for someone to figure out how to unlock 1.1.2

I read somewhere that it is possible to unlock just the ipod and wifi features. If i did that would i be able to fully unlock it later on when they finally crack it?

yeah thats what i was talking about. but at the moment anysim doesnt work with the new bootloader(4.6) or something like that, so if you use that method you only get the itouch features.

Hi

If you want another site full of useful info check out www.modmyiphone.com. (appears to be down at the moment)

1.1.2 has been out for quite a while now and the baseband has not been cracked.

If you don't want to end up with an expensive ipod touch you may be better to purchase an unlocked unit from ebay. Good units for about the same sort of price can be had if you visit ebay often enough.
