Hi.

I have a year old ipad, and my kids use it a lot more than they used to. We have gone a year with no case, but my 3 year old is a lot more careless than my older child and I am now worried it might get scratched or dropped.

The rub is that I hate cases on mobile devices, so I am looking for something that is "barely there" but that still offers reasonable protection.

Anyone got a recommendation?

I have one in my iPad mini. It will protect against scratches bot certainly not against falls.

Any other iPad case seems to be quite bulky to me...

Thanks, but that won't protect the screen and ideally I want something that will protect against a smallish fall. Maybe I a being overly hopeful.

The genuine Apple cases are fairly minimal in terms of bulk but give an ok amount of protection - I use the Apple cover, which covers the screen as well, but they make a case that just covers the back. A pity you didn't want one a few weeks back, as DSE was selling (some colours) of the cases for $5 and the covers for $10! I've bought similar and decent knock-offs for about $20 from eBay.

I'd also suggest using a screen protector as well if you get a case that only covers the back - I changed to a glass one recently and it's far superior to the plastic ones; best-value ones are from eBay, AliExpress or similar. They add little to the thickness but can save the screen (I dropped my phone recently and smashed the protector, but the screen itself was ok).

I also wanted a slim case for my sleek new iPhone 6S, and ended up with one of these (actually purchased via the Apple store):

It meets the specs on being minimal, and has proven to be more than capable of handling a few "normal-ish" drops. I haven't seen their iPad equivalent cases in the flesh, and the price may be a bit scary, but based on the quality of the iPhone one I'd certainly recommend them. You'd still need to do something else about protecting the screen from scratches.

i bought an apple smart case but it split apart at the seams. Poor quality in my experience. Happened to quite a lot of others if you google it, but no idea what percentage actually fail in this way.

You really need a folio case which has the rubber corners. Belkin do one called a cinema case.. The ipad can be easily taken out of it which is one of the good things about it, and it does look really nice in the case, as you can see the whole ipad apart from the corners. The thin barely there type cases that click onto case are really only designed to prevent scratching, and they tend to always crack at the corners.

It's very difficult to get a screen that protects well but doesn't add too much to the overall bulk of the unit.

I've tried the cheap plastic screen protectors but found that any dust at all under them left bubbles that couldn't be removed. Got very annoyed with it and threw the plastic protector in the bin. I'm now rocking a surround only and haven't touched the screen.

I've dropped a previous iPad on the ground and stuffed it. If the angle is right, landing on corner will do much damage instantly. I personally think that if you're going to go down the protector route, that you go down the protector route properly and accept the added bulk.

Several companies do a life proof or equivalent case, and the nuud options don't cover the screen. You can get waterproof by sealing against the original screen, which I thought was impressive. I have a griffin? Survivor case sitting next to me on the work ipad. It's actually not too bad and hasn't impacted on the screen touch ability at all.
