I am based in New Zealand. I have updated my Gen 1 iPhone to firmware 2.0. I have pwned it. All operational except Edge. When I load Saari, I keep getting the following error:

Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication required.

I have used SmartFTP to download carrier.plist from the vodafone_nz.bundle folder. I converted it, added

<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key> <true/>. Saved the file as a txt file and uploaded back up to the iPhone under codafone_nz.bundle folder.  This has made no difference at all. Under Settings - General - Network there is no edge tab but I do have data roaming, VPN and Wi-Fi tabs only. I have also tried removing the above entry and inserting:
<key>apn</key>
<string>www.vodafone.net.nz</string>
<key>password</key>
<string />
<key>username</key>
<string />

I thought that by doing this I would not require the edge tab as this entry in carrier.txt would point edge in the right direction. This did not work.

I have called Vodafone NZ and they have obviously said that they do not support iphone GEN1.  The lady did however say that firmware 2.0 is not designed for the edge network.  It works only on the 3G network.  I don't believe this or else if I moved our of a 3G coverage the data would not work on EDGE/GPRS.  Everything works via wi-fi.  I just keep getting that darn error!!!!!

I really want to run firmware 2.0 so I can remote update calendar and contacts as well as mail. I am thinking I may have to go back to 1.1.4. I do NOT want to buy an iPhone3G just yet as I am waiting for them to drop in price (just like Gen 1 they did in US.) Please help!!!!! Based in New Zealand.

Vodafone NZ do not have a EDGE network that is live! the device will fall back to the slower GPRS

Can you put your SIM into another handset and browse the web?

Are you on prepay or On acc?

I have a 200MB/Month data plan with Vodafone.  Not signed up for any period of time... Just month to month and I can cancel it at any time without penalty.
When the firmware was 1.1.4 or lower version in the same iPhone, no problems with GPRS data.
If I put my sim in another phone I can browse the internet with no problems.
All I want to do is be able to access GPRS in my iphone Gen1 with firmware 2.0.  GPRS will NOT work.  Just keep getting PDP authentication problem.  The only thing I have not tried doing is putting the AT&T sim that came with the phone, going to Settings - General - Network, removing the AT&T sim, then putting my sim in the iPhone.  However all this would 'apparently' enable me to do is make the apn: www.vodafone.net.nz.  I thought I would be able to force the phone to see the apn as www.vodafone.net.nz by changing carrier.txt.  Didn't work.
Seeing there is no EDGE network in NZ, maybe I've been barking up the wrong tree by changing the EDGE settings.  Does firmware 2.0 stop GPRS data?  I am sooooooooooo frustrated!

1st GEN iphone should have no issues on the Vodafone NZ network and the APN www.vodafone.net.nz is correct.

If SIM works in another device with no issues its related to the handset setup

Awesome.  What do I change to get it working?
My brother has another iPhone Gen1 bought at the same time.  He also has upgraded to firmware 2.0 and has exactly the same problem.
I see on some USA forums that people in other countries have the same issue.  They say that the resolution is to change carrier.plist for the counrty that I am in.  I have done this but to no avail.  Any setup pointers would be very much appreciated.

From memory when you upgrade to 2.0 on the first gen iphone you get apn locked, have you tried unlockit.co.nz?

I've updated quite a number of Gen 1 Iphones with pwnage tool 2.0.1.

It will install NZ Settings on the Phone (APN of: www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz) and then from then on you can use the same method (either the swap sim trick or easier  my website (see other discussions about it). (Also the 1st time you put the phone in itunesit i will say there are new carrier prefs available. its ok to put them in

If you are editing the files directly then you will have to reboot the iPhone as far as I knww)

Thanks

Thank you everybody.  I have just gone to unlockit directly on my iphone through wi-fi and gprs not works like a dream.  I had read so much about editing the carrier.plist file that I was downloading the unlockit file from the pc, renaming it carrier.txt and then uploading to replace carrier.plist.  I have realised my mistake and I now have my beloved iphone fully back on-line using firmware 2.0.  I REALLY appreciate your help.

Hey LennonNZ - maybe you might want to advertise the fact that your website unlockit.co.nz also works on iPhone 1st gens (2.5g) winpwn'd to the new 2.0 software .. I too had PDP (no data) problem and your site fixed it for me... especially well worth the effort nw that VFNZ data is now only $1 for 10mb.  works a treat.  just a thought - keep up the great work..

thanks

Hi guys....

I have this same issue. However, as  complete NOOB I am having issues.

Phone is a GEN 1 on 2.0 using PWNAGE 2.01 - phone works ok, apps load - everything is cool except no GRPS whilst away from Wifi

Have gone to used the APN changer using www.unlockit.co.nz - adds a "Profile" under Settings | General |Profile - but still no joy.

Have even started from scratch and re-done all steps.

I am on a BRAND NEW PREPAY SIM

Any advice greatly appreciated

Ray
