Going over to australia for a week and looking at purchasing an optus prepaid sim which seems to be the cheapest prepaid 3g option ($50 for 500mb of data plus calling etc). From reading other posts on this board it sounds like I don't have a problem with sim locking but I am wondering about apn settings. Some say the apn is stored in the sim card which sounds like it is just plug and play but can anyone confirm? Thanks

When another operators SIM in the iphone 3G you can edit the APN field

This is mentioned many times on GZ and is correct

The APN is not stored on the SIM

You are taking a iphone 3G from Vodafone NZ so this would not count

that's great thanks. so it would just be a matter of manually specifying the optus apn and everything should then work fine. would anyone know where i can find the correct 3g apn? i've had a bit of a look online but can't find it. not sure if it's something optus would provide if asked

Just use the APN " internet " this is standard across most carriers.

As far as I know it looks at the Carrier ID of the SIM in the iphone and then uses that to choose the Carrier File.

I may be wrong..

Has anyone got an iPhone from Overseas, placed a Vodafone NZ sim in it and activated it?

Thanks
