The national bank has released online banking for the iphone and ipod touch!! Only account balances and transaction summary, but it's incredibly quick.

Seriously, what's "quite a while"? A month or so before? It's not like it someone changes bank just because of a mobile Internet banking, is it?

Kiwibank's solution is a rendered website whereas NBNZ's is an iPhone application.

so while kiwi bank has gone "mobile" i.e. made a page that fits on all mobiles (not just iPhones), National Bank has decided to exclude all of these and just cater for iPhones?

ASB and BankDirect has have mobile sites for well over 12 months now.

Lets say I noticed it not long after launch of the Iphone in NZ.

What ever the technical reason is-dedicated application or rendered to fit it works.

Not true - National Bank have had a java applet program available for any java-enabled mobile phone (thats practically all of them) for ages. I certainly don't see anything here to criticize National Bank for. Hopefully future updates will add further functionality.

I've been less than successful trying to get my account enabled to use this app. I downloaded the app last night but before it will let you login you have to call National Bank and get them to activate it. Last night the CSR thought I was talking about MBanking (the java applet) and tried to text the programs URL to me - I tried to explain that this was not MBanking but a program they had added to iTunes for the iPhone and iPod touch but it didn't seem to compute. He then told me their systems were playing up and could I call back in an hour!

This morning I called again and had a similar experience - the CSR thought I was talking about MBanking and didn't seem to know anything about this app. He put me on hold to find out about it and when he came back he told me that for now new registrations to the service were suspended because 'they found it didn't work'. He took my mobile number and told me a member of the IT team would call me when it was available again.

Has anybody managed to actually get it activated?

I had the same experience.  I'm following this up internally.

I was on the trial of this, so luckily my Online Banking was already set up. However, I can understand how the Bank's call centre staff haven't quite caught up with it yet - I guess they have to know everything about everything as soon as it becomes public, and it can be tricky distributing that knowledge evenly and quickly among several hundred people, most of whom will never have seen an iPhone before. It took them a while to catch up with the Java Mobile Banking too, from what I remember. Hopefully it'll be easier during the day today when there there are more likely to be a few better informed staff about.

Meanwhile... I have to say I love the look of the KiwiBank iPhone webapp. Their latest feature of multi-language support really does it for me - loving their corporate sense of humour.

ASB internet banking on your mobile is now optimised for your iPhone handset. Just like internet banking on your PDA and smartphone it s easy to access the most popular FastNet Classic Internet banking features

ASB version is more than readonly balances and transactions, I can perform transfers, bill payments and FastCheque.

Why is this thread getting filled up with "my bank's mobile banking is better than your bank's mobile banking" posts? Let's keep this on-topic -- this thread is for discussing the National Bank app.

Training material and comms were provided to the call centre staff, but it sounds like there may have been a missed gap with the night shift.  Is all good now.

Can you confirm that new registrations are still on hold though? Or should I call again and be setup straight away now?

Thanks

Steve
