Searching this forum is your friend, a quick search will turn up all the answers you need.  In the meantime:

You need to enable an APN.  Connect to WiFi and then browse to www.unlockit.co.nz, and choose the option to enable data for any sim.  Install the certificate that appears and you're all good.

Failing that, install BossPrefs from Cydia and ensure EDGE is set to ON

ZALMAN: I have updated my Iphone 2g to version 2.0.1 but have no edge tab now what have I done wrong or missed out?

what has stuffed me up on a few occasions is the fact that when u update your firmware and restore from a backup then WHATEVER EDGE SETTING was set to when that backup occured will be what is transfered at any time later on that you update your firmware .

An example... you sync your iphone.. we do this alot don't we.   well is edge on or off when you do this (if a backup occurs)

So I have Boss Prefs installed and make sure Edge is set to on when i sync/backup and that way even if I update the firmware and DON'T jail break it at the tune Edge will still be on.

Thats my way of doing it and it works sweet and saves me a bit of pain forinstance when i went from 2.01 to 2.02 and a jail break for 2.02 wasnt working for the first week...
