Hi guys,

Iv just got my new iPhone 3gs (32GB). Im running it on telecoms XT network (using NZ bullets Carrier Bundle). Seems to all be working as it should. The only problem is with the maps application. It cant seem to track my current location accuratly. The current location on screen in km's off. Anyone else have this problem?

Do you get a circle around your location (worked out via Cell sites) or an actual point (done via GPS) ?

I got a circle. but there's a point inside the circle (in the center of course). So far it has decided on 2 current locations. The fist one was about 2k's away. 2nd one is about 5k's away.

The Circle/Dot is a Guess via A-GPS (via a guess via the cellsites). a Dot only is a GPS .

Go outside :-)

anothrt thing to try...

Turn off 3G and connect via wifi and try again.. it will force it to use GPS instead of AGPS. and then turn 3G back on.

AGPS will use the cellsite locations and other things. (circle around the location).

. I don't know how the Phone knows the locations.. maybe Apple's servers don't have the locations of the Telecom Cellsites? or is the location sent via the signal and Telecom's Locations are not set very well?

Its a known problem people have talked about on other carriers

Didn't think telecom supported cell positioning? Even if they don't gps should still work, you will need to be outside tho.

Im here on XT as well, and found that I got my first lock within 3-4 seconds, which is lightning fast even comparing to my TomTom unit. Not having used an iPhone 3G before I dont know if this fast is how its always been.

I am surprised we don't see more posts about GPS... A lot of people don't realise GPS is more related to satellites in the sky than their telco.

GPS satellite signals are really weak and having a clear view of the sky during initialisation helps get a precise location. AGPS can only help giving your device a "general area" location and it's not precise at all.

About XT Network AGPS: interesting I have a few GPS-enabled handsets here, and one of those won't give me any location unless I have the minimum three satellites locked, but another one will give me the general area straight away even with no satellites locked - both Windows Mobile devices, both on XT.

I have a Navman GPS here (not a phone, which im guessing is the difference) but it won't give me ANY information unless it has a solid lock of 3 satellites.

Any less, and it will just not work at all.

Are you sure?

I always though the circle was the accuracy your handset from the satellite signals, eg if it had only locked onto only two satellite's the precision would be less, or indoors your handset may be getting signals bounced off a sky scraper and the distance therefore would be wrong.

I'm on XT which doesn't have AGPS and still get the circle.

I remember during the first gulf war, America disabled the accuracy of the GPS system to 30-40? metres from the usual 3-4 but only in the gulf, and only for civilian devices. Made driving around town for tourists a whole lot more fun
