Hey there,

Can anyone please give a simple step by step on how I could possibly set up my work email (exchange) on my iphone, i enter all the correct info (i think) yet everytime it says registration failed. Is this a common problem or am I doing something wrong potentially?

any help appreciated.

I found setting up my works Exchange Server on my iPhone and iPod Touch was very simple. You have to keep in mind that your works Exchange Server must have an external interface - otherwise it will never work. It is normally over SSL.

In regards to setup:
1, Pick Exchange Email type
2, Put in server address (mail.XXXXX.co.nz)
3, Put in email address/password/domain (Machines Domain name - normally a simple name)

and Boom - found the exchange, connected then started syncing.

Do you know if your Works exchange can be accessed from outside?

Has your work exchange got OWA enabled??

And this should not be in the Telecom NZ section

As above you need to establish if you can make contact with OWA from outside the organistation eg. can you check your email from a computer connected to the internet say from your home for example.

Usually to do this you would type something like https://mail.something.com/exchange or could be /owa to get the login screen.

The address you need to put into the iphone for the above example is mail.something.com

I am in the same boat with exchange

owa is enabled

address is owa.domain.co.nz

I have tried most things with no joy

any help appreciated

could possibly be work firewall?

Self signed certificate is fine with exchange on the iPhone it's one of the only devices that doesn't require the certificate to connect.

OP suggest that you talk with you exchange administrator at your work - it could be blocked for a very good reason.

How does it establish a secure connection without a certifcate? I understand it will use a public issued certificate because there will be certs already on the device. But if you have a self-signed certificate you must be able to install it on the handset before it can establish a secure connection...

Make sure this works is first step, even if that works doesn't mean your phone will work, there are other services broadly called activesync, that sometimes can go wrong

During the email setup you get a warning about the certificate you simply accept it and the iphone will happily use the self issued cert, no need to go through the heartache of installing the cert like some of the early win mobile devices.

ok this may be the problem no oma support

Yes using self signed certificate

Yes IT has okayed it

they are not wanting to spend anytime on it though untill they get the vodafone APN sorted
they said it should work then becasue the phone will be on the company network

I am the only one in the company using a iphone the rest are using blackberrys as they have a blackberry server
