I have just completed a Layar http://www.layar.com that shows all the cell phone towers for NZ and I am looking for a few people with android/iphones to test it out.

All you need to have is a layar compatible android / iphone with layar installed and send me a message (with your email address)  and I can email you how to access the layar.

Ever wondered why you had such terrible cell phone coverage in one spot and better in another, or why Telecom coverage was great and Vodafone horrible. Wonder no more! You can now see all the cell phone towers in NZ and use this layar to show where the best coverage may be.

All of the current Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees mobile phone transmitter locations as points.

Attributes included are the client name, management right ID, licence number, site name, frequency and power.

Derived from the Register of Radio Frequencies. http://www.rsm.govt.nz/

I will expect feedback on  the testing as I do not have a Layar capable phone

Love to try it out! Will try to PM you once I figure out how to do it on mobile safari. Was hoping someone would write an app for that!

Got it running now on 3GS. Working a treat here in Ashburton tonight, will eventually venture outside tomorrow and confirm/verify data and layar integration.

Cheers will install it when Im not on mobile bb. Assuming the map is quite a few mb?
Btw what's up with the reviews of layar which say about it running extra services and also doesn't uninstall properly?

It can only fetch results from max 5km radius? When I'm in the boondocks the closest tower can be further away than that! And that's when I'm most likely going to be wanting to know where it is so I can maximize reception. The worldpeaks layar I use sometimes has a 100km radius from memory.

The good news for the downloads is that because it is putting the points of interest (POI's) over your live camera image there is very little data downloaded (unless you switch to the map view and then it downloads google map images)

Layar uses JSon as the data format which is a text format similar to XML, so the actual POI data is less than 500 bytes

As to the extra services and not uninstalling correctly I have not seen anything about this... Please post where you have seen this

I have changed the max range to be 50km... let me know if that is a better maximum....You will need to reload the layer (or close layar and restart)  the other limit is a max of 150 points to manage the total amount that will be shown in a city

Neat, spotted your change already! The app seems to refresh quite often in list view, might be a layar thing, but a little annoying when you're scrolling thru and it all disappears for a second.

Replied to your PM re range, but yeah 50km is a good number. Where I am located just now I get 34 Telecom towers, 13 vodafone towers, and 0 2degrees towers; inside a 50km radius. I thought my telecom reception was superior in this region!
