Hello,

I need to get the home button investigated and probably replaced on my iPhone. It is very unresponsive!! I have to restart the phone to go back to the menu screen every time I want to go into a different application.

Does anyone know where reputable repairers are in Wellington where I can get this done, and if so, how much it would cost do you think?

How old is the phone? Still under warranty? Where did you get it from?

No, it's not in warranty unfortunately. It is the iPhone 3G 16GB. I got it in 2008.

Do note they charge an inspection fee.

No, it's not in warranty unfortunately. It is the iPhone 3G 16GB. I got it in 2008.

You may have recourse under the Consumer Guarantees Act, even though it isn't under warranty. While concrete time periods aren't specified under the Act, it states that purchased goods must last a reasonable amount of time. And I'd certainly expect a high end smartphone such as the iPhone to last longer than two years before breaking.

I had a two year old Pioneer A/V receiver fixed under the CGA, even though it only had a one year warranty. This was all done at no cost to me whatsoever (apart from the time and hassle to chase this all up). I had taken the receiver to an authorised repairer, and they had quoted me nearly $300 to fix it (and charged me a $55 inspection fee to tell me this). When I refused the repair and asked for the details of the problem, they initially refused to give me a breakdown of what was wrong with it (which is their policy if the work indicated in the quote is declined). When I told them I wanted the details so I could go back to the retailer for recourse under the CGA, they contacted the Pioneer distributer directly and got permission to perform the repair for free (including refunding the initial inspection fee).

My home button on my 3g 16gb, stopped working altogether,about the same age too, nov 08, i looked it up on youtube and found loads of videos.

There is 2 tiny ( real tiny pins) that connect the home button to the main unit ( the home button being attached to the front screen ) you can take it apart yourself and really gently bend the V shaped pins, up to make a better connection. And Really really gently as well as they are easy to break.

One of mine was broke so i managed to place some solder on it to make the connection.

Anyway i found searching on trademe i replacement button which i got for 13 dollars inc postage. However on thinking i could just easily change the button, i didnt watch the entire video on how to.. you have to melt the glue that holds the screen and the backing apart( once you have dissected the phone) to change the home button. the home button is sandwiched between.

So i didnt bother. Now im not sure if it the home button or sluggish phone software.

From my friend:

Yes can do, the price can vary because you have to remove the touch glass and LCD screen from the mounting plate, its glued on!, it could break in so doing, the cost if it doesnt
break would be around $60, if it did break it would go up by $50, there would be a two week delay after I got the fone approx before it was repaired
as the parts come from Hong Kong and take that long from order.
