I've got a recently imported nearly new Range Rover (Nov 2011). Does anyone know how I can update it with NZ maps? Land Rover NZ are really unhelpful but they definitely have these maps. It's a new system from Navteq which uses a USB not a disk.

I don't know, but I suspect that the Landy maps will cost you more than a new GPS. My suggestion: get any model Garmin Nuvi and you can use the free NZOpenGPS maps, which are updated weekly.

Friend had same issue on imported BMW a year or so back. He did however find a source for the map, but I think it was somewhere in the vicinity of $700 - $800 by the time it was loaded by the dealer. Even then there were no guarantees how good it was going to be for NZ, or if any updates were going to be made available.

Like Beddhist said, may be better to just go buy a GPS off the shelf. It will be cheaper and likely more relevant.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Can't be of any direct help but have you tried any Range Rover based forums? While you might not find a NZ specific answer I would imagine that people will have encountered similar issues and possibly found a fix or process to follow.

It would be very narrow minded of LRNZ to dismiss the opportunity to help a potential new and long term client

I would consider looking on torrents, if LRNZ is not much help, but they should be helping.

I know it's common sense just to get a sat-nav but when you've got this system it seems crazy that it can't work.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, built in GPS systems areusually terrible.

an off-the-shelf GPS unit can be bought for less than $200 (sometimes for $100) and probably works a lot better than the built in one.

I think it should be possible.

I had to do something similar recently to reload the operating system onto a friends netbook, they had the disc but no disc drive installed, I copied the stuff from the disc onto a USB drive. It wasn't a straight copy in this case I don't remember exactly how I did it now but it wasn't too difficult.

Do a bit of Googling there's bound to be some instructions on how to do this on the net.

EDIT:
In your case I imagine it may just be a simple matter of copying the stuff from the disc to a USB drive though there may be some encyption to stop copying. Ask NavTeq if it can be done. In my case I had to make a bootable drive which complicated things some what.

I guess you made the mistake to tell the car firm that you imported the car...

Time to write to Landrover HQ in GB, telling them about your experience with the firm and asking them where you can buy this map update, which should be a Landy part.

Navteq is a mapping company, the maps have to be formatted for the specific brand and model of car navigation in the car. They can not provide you with maps. The software should be the same as in the models sold in NZ if it is a new car. I would go back to your local Land Rover dealership who will be wanting to provide your services and speak to the service manager. Don't go anywhere near the sales people, they probably won't have a clue what you are talking about.

The way all these cars are going is that map updates are done through the diagnostic systems when the cars are serviced, because the map updates are relatively large files, i.e. you wouldn't want to download them via a mobile SIM.
