Hey all,

First post.

I had a question about two different GPS units and the toll route up north (my folks going up north this coming weekend).
My folks bought a new GPS unit - a Navman EZY250, changed their minds because of a couple of address errors and exchanged it for a Garmin Nuvi 52

Each had their pluses and minuses, but something we noticed is that when inputting the address into the Navman, it told us there was a toll road on the way (which there is), and asked whether we wanted to avoid it or not. This seemed pretty good.

With the Garmin though, it doesn't ask this, so they're not sure which route it is choosing.

Does anyone know if the Garmin is able to choose between the two routes?
This is the very first time we have used the device, and aren't sure of a few things.

I've seen people on the forum here talk about the open source maps for Garmin.
What are they? And how are they different from the inbuilt maps?
What are the pluses and minuses?

Any help greatly appreciated

Tom Tom also alerts to these things so surprised the Garmin doesn't????

They should be able to browse the selected route to see if it sticks to the state highway or goes through Orewa. If the maps up to date is should choose the best route which would be via the state highway and the toll road.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

The Garmin should offer the choice if there is more than 1 route. In Settings under Avoidances you can select Tolls and ģğ Fees.

Hi Joseph,

I don't know anything about Navmans, but I'm on my 3rd Garmin and none of them had this feature, at least not with the maps I have been using. They do, however, have a setting to avoid toll routes. You will probably find this under Settings - Navigation.

Having said that, we have so few toll roads in NZ that it really isn't worth worrying about. Since the Northern Toll Road is both the shortest and the quickest route to anywhere in the North you can safely assume that the Garmin will send you through there, unless you change the above avoidance setting.

I am a map maintainer for the "Open Source Maps", the NZOpenGPSMaps. You find them here: http://www.nzopengps.org/ These are free maps you can load into any Garmin GPS navigator and use them instead of the official Garmin maps.

The difference is: "our" maps are updated weekly. We obtain our data from LINZ and we also rely heavily on feedback from our users via the forum. New major roads appear in our maps the week they are opened.

The Garmin maps are updated about 4 times a year. On the other hand, they have lane guidance and in the big cities they sometimes show you an actual picture of an upcoming junction. We cannot produce free maps with these features.
