I have a issue with excessive data usage that Orcon cant seem to solve.

Our data meter clocks up data even when a computer or wireless router (or even a LAN Cable) is not connected .We are being charged for around 6GB per day. The only way to stop the data from cranking up is to cut power to the modem.

Our usage from November- February was under 15gb/month,  March was 130GB. We also experienced the 10day period in late Feb in which no data was recorded against our account that's when our trouble started.

After three weeks Orcon still hasn't given us an answer. One of their customer service personal admitted that the systems for monitoring data use didn't work properly.

Does anybody have a similar problem?

I would be more worried about what is in the computer!

If you have a PC it might be a good idea to scan it with Malwarebytes

Even if there is inst a computer or router connected to the modem?

Thats the part that make me think that the issue is with Orcon.

Do you have any open ports on the router? I know of viruses and or other malware that once infected will phone home to a server. That server will then attempt to log on to the IP address of your connection by sending continuous RDP traffic to the IP. Even if the connects can't be established because your PC is unplugged or turned off, the traffic will still reach your router and clock up your usage. So it might pay to scan the PC anyway, make sure it's up to date with all updates, and turn off any open ports that you don't need to be open. Even change the ports you do need to be open to something non-standard.

Unplug the router from the wall and turn it off. Take a photo with a timestamp. If your usage is still increasing, it's an Orcon issue. Pretty sure I saw somewhere they are having usage meter issues, so I wouldn't be overly worried so long as you can prove your router was unplugged but usage continued. Worth noting, that usage meters run behind, so you will need to leave it off for say 8 hours or more.. Maybe from 7am till 7pm?

The 1st day of this month between 00:01 and 12:00 something transferred 750mb up and down.

Tracked it to java.exe process on a 2003 server. Not sure what it was doing but i now run a script every hour and kills the process. i did email Orcon to ask them what the data was, but they said they couldnt tell.

I run http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ on my computers. Handy for fault finding.

But if the router isnt connected, then it sounds like an orcon problem.

Also possible your wifi connection (if you have one) has become compromised from the outside. ie neighbours using your internet.

Get another router to try and see if same issue occurs. Orcon might even send you a loaner to try.....

Yes we've experienced that in Devember last year and January this year. Orcon first said it was also being experienced by other customers, then they said we had to pay the charges because we had a virus. Although they couldn't name it. We didn't have a virus and the wi-fi is protected by a strong password. Usage was OK for a couple of years then it spiked to 6, 8 or 10 gb per day in Dec then went back to normal. One day it spiked to 13gb in Jan. I gave up with them and went to Clear instead, more gb for less money also. Orcon are still chasing me for $126 for the spikes which they adamantly claim we have used and have now given me my last warning before going to the debt collectors. Great way to treat a customer who always paid on time for years.
