Hi all,

I'm an orcon customer using Orcon Genius (with the Orcon router), over the past few days I've been experiencing a massive drop in quality of service for my internet connection.

Previously I had upwards of 1.4Mbits/s, but according to orcon genius's data, my internet speed is now 819kb/s for download.

Furthermore this is my result according to a speedtest.net:


For a NZ server the ping is off the charts and so is the speed.

I have called in Orcon today and asked for help from the tech department, the best they could attempt was a line reset which did not help at all. 

I'm wondering if anyone can help me resolve this problem? But this is really starting to annoy me with the poor service, I'm wondering if other ISPs might be better.

upstream
Noise margin: 9dB
Attenuation 27dB

downstream: 6dB
Attenuation 48dB

Have you plugged in any new device in your line? Removed any filter? Moved things around?

Haven't touched my setup since Orcon Genius arrived, this is the second time this problem occurred, the first time the line reset resolved my prolem (I think, may have been placebo). 

The quality decreased since the bad weather hit Auckland

Obviously it wasn't particularly speedy before when it was 1.4 Mbits/s
Has anything else changed in your area other than the weather - no new cabinets appeared or anything like that?

Is there anything new planned on the Chorus maps?

To my knowledge there haven't been any changes to the cabinets, I don't get UFB for another few years, and my internet speed is just poor in general for some reason.

Have you got a master splitter on where the wiring comes in the house?

Your attenuation is very high so there is no chance of getting any fasther speeds.

The first thing would be to look at the wiring within your home.

Without knowing your location, your distance from a cabinet or exchange, whether you're on a ULL or wholesale connection, whether you're in a 10Mbps zone, whether you have a master filter, and what the general layout of your internal home wiring is there isn't much else anybody can help you with.

You mentioned since the bad weather hit...... this indicates there could be damp/moisture getting into the line somewhere which will cause noise on the line affecting your connection.

I don't have a master splitter, how exactly does one go about checking the wiring in their house? 

Also I have wiring insurance from Orcon according to the plan, does that cover this kind of stuff?

Covers more "solid" faults. I.E. a faulty jack point. It won't cover reflections etc caused by multiple stubs. Generally it would only cover your ADSL if it is not working at all. Was really there for back in the days of line used for voice.

I finally found the line about how to check your wires in the thread, I've inadvertantly checked my line many times now in the past few years trying to resolve my internet issues, but generally 1.6Mb/s is the top speed I've ever gotten with no significant variation in attenuation.
