I am having trouble with them about their 30 day notice period policy.

I am prepared to talk to Target or Fair Go about this, after watching this Target show here.

Not sure you can get support when people here doesn't know the story. Or are you talking about "Orcon support"?

You will need to explain more about the problem with their 30 day policy. I think lots of isps have something similar don't they?

Not sure if this is what the OP is talking about, but it does seem a bit rough that you have to give 30 days notice to cancel your account, but having an open service order makes it difficult for you transfer to another provider.

Having never actually changed ISP, i'm still not clear how this works.
I think you just call your new ISP and say you're changing. So say you do this middle of your billing cycle, do you then have to pay two full billing cycles with your old ISP or what?

The 30 day notice is part of the initial agreement that you sign up with. It does not mean I agree with it

Depends.  If your problem is just that there is a 30 day notice policy, and you don't like that, then no.  I'm sure if you actually described your trouble more people might support you - heck, Orcon might even sort it for you!

Hi James. Our 30 day notice period is part of our Terms and Conditions which you agree to when you sign up.

I would be more than happy to look into this for you though (if there is some particular reason you are disputing the 30 day notice period?), can you send me a PM with your user name and I will check it out.

Giving 30 days' notice does not create an open service order on your line, unless we place a cancellation order too. If you transfer to another provider, we won't place a cancellation order until your services have been moved.

How can someone complain about something they agreed to in the terms,

I am sure FairGo and target will not be interested in this story! Maybe if you were a carpet cleaner they might take some notice

I can see plenty of reasons myself.

There are many cases where terms and conditions either break the law or there is a deliberate attempt to conceal important T&C in the fine print.

The OP has included insufficient information to form an opinion. But, from the little information provided I tend to be on Orcons side.

Quite true. However it reminds me of the South Park episode about the iTunes terms of use though.

But in this case Orcon is quite explicit about their 30 day policy in their terms but I bet majority of the people who sign up are fully aware of it but eventually forget about that clause. I personally know of people who fall into the same trap.

From an accounting and reporting point of view it makes perfect sense. but a 30 day notice period is slightly different to billing for a month in advance. Does anyone know of other ISPs that adopt a similar policy to Orcons?

Yes, all of them.  Telco services are never month in arrears for the fixed price component.

I am not talking about the story I had. All I am talking about is this policy. I think this policy is very unfair to the consumers. Why do they need 30 days notice, what is it for? Switching ISPs should be the same as switching power companies, but actually it is not.

I admit I forgot about this policy, because I was only advised about it very briefly in the phone conversation when I signed up, and also it was about 2 years ago. All I remember is my account should be “no contract, no termination fee, no…..” as Orcon advertised proudly.  Actually there is a contract called “30 day notice period”, I think “no contract” is very misleading.

After paying a premium price for 2 years, about $113 for only 30G of data, still have so much trouble at the end. Orcon even had special offers to the new customers, but it does not apply to the existing customers who have been for more than 1 year. They told me I need to sign up for another one year so that I can get that special offer!

Also Orcon’s speed was so slow, sometimes I just can’t open some webpages, not even mention the online vidoes. I thought maybe all the nz broadbands are the same, but my current one is much faster. I can even watch the videos on overseas websites very smoothly.

Just a few questions after watching the Target TV show.

Why the “admin error” was so hard to find out, Orcon can’t find it for years and even called Baycrop to chase the money, then suddenly it became so easy to find out after the Target got involved?

If the “30 day notice period” applies to all the customers, this customer should be paying for at least two months, the first month plus the 30 day notice period, why he got the full credits at the end?

Does anyone know someone had the same problem with other ISPs? If not, why only Orcon’s customer got into this trap all the time???

Thats like comparing apples with oranges. Power companies are solely reselling the same product, so when switching you get the exact same electricity. When you switch ISP, depedning on who it is, it maybe going into the ISPs own equipment at the exchange, or it may even be going via a totally different network eg cable instead of copper line in the case of telstra.
