After moving place, trying to recover an account I have only just paid the early cancellation fee on and having an absolutely terrible conversation with a 'help' desk person I finally get the good news of:

"We've got a confirmed date back. On 24 Oct 2012, Slingshot will be activating your new 'Better Network' services at your place."

Followed, 4 hours later by:

"We’re really sorry, but your local exchange doesn’t have enough ports (a fancy word for connections).......

We’ve put you on the waiting list and we’ll let you know when a connection comes up, ASAP. However we do have some good news …

We CAN give you free dial-up!"

So, being stuck between a signed rental agreement, a business run from home and polytech done online, what are my options? Has anyone been on one of these wait lists and it resolved reasonably quickly?

Are there reliable (and cost effective) truely wireless providers?

Essentially, we move in to this place tomorrow and I absolutely would have bailed out of the rental agreement had I known I would be back in the 90s for internet connections.

Unfortunately, it really does matter what position you are in the queue. First place does not necessarily you will get a connection faster either! You could have a connection tomorrow, or in three years time. If you call Slingshot, they will be able to tell you your position in the queue in about two weeks time. This is when Telecom updates the lists and spams them out.

My partners family are on a wait list. They are second in the queue and have been there for over 2 years.

Yeah sorry about that, unfortunately full exchanges is something that is out of our hands.

If you PM me your account number I can take a look at the waiters list and give you a rough idea of how long the wait is.

Is the "better network" an unbundled service? If it's Slingshot's gear that's at capacity then you may be able to connect with a different ISP (which will usually use Telecom gear).

Hey,

Won't work with Telecom because we wholesale telecom as well as provide unbundled connections. If its port waiter its most likely on a Telecom port anyway and we will all be in the same waiter position.

That, and if the waiter tries to connect with another ISP, they will be punted to the bottom of the list.

Hi - I have PM'd Ben my account number and called tech support for a chat.

It appears that the address has the phones on the better network (namely Slingshot gear), but the BB still goes through telecom (or whoever).

I'm just absolutely blown away that in a town that is rolling out UFB, there can be spots on very busy streets that simply get told 'sorry'.

I dont have any experience with them, but maybe look into Eastern Online (http://www.EOL.co.nz/) for wireless services. Certainly not as cheap as DSL, but better than dialup.

Yeah it still happens unfortunately...

I don't know if its still the case but when I started working here there was a 3 + year wait for Broadband in central Auckland - keep in mind this is spread across all providers.

Correct. Go for EOL - they have excellent wireless service over here.

It also pays to check with them (EOL) if you can have Fibre.

The other option to consider would be 2degrees mobile broadband - it depends on how much data you need etc

Ha - yea, I'd love more than 800kbps up, but that just isn't likely. Not until I move to an area with fibre.

Still - really happy with the result considering I couldn't get wireless due to line of sight issues.
