Whilst trying to figure out how to use the Genius file server feature I found all the old threads on here that say that (a) the usb drive must be self powered and (b) no more than 100gb. Has the situation changed? Not much use for my 1TB Passport movie drive otherwise...

No.

It only worked for a while when I plugged in a 1TB ntfs drive. And was painfully slow.

For a suggestion on a low power server for external drives ...
A belkin sharemax router running tomatousb firmware is serving up my external drives really nicely and was a cheap piece of kit.

Thanks for the info and suggestion. Is that the standard firmware or something special? If the Genius won't do the job then I would prefer something very simple to configure and get going. My networking skills are not great.

Ideally the solution would enable me to access my home files via the web too, as well as at home over wifi.
