Hello,

Slingshot are running a current promotion at the moment for students where if they sign up to Slingshot you can go into the draw to win $50000! Anyway I was wondering if any GZ member works for Slingshot because I'm already with Slingshot but I'm not bound to a fixed term contract - to get to the point, can someone pull some strings to get me into the draw so I don't have to disconnect and resign again?

I did ring up and one of the C.S. operators tried to help me out but at a loss and the time I would be without broadband if I time it right (disconnect/reconnect) would be about 10 days which isn't worth the hassle.

i just went through this with Sky TV. They didnt place anywhere near the equivilent value on a 5 year existing customer vs. a new customer, and wouldnt extend the same offer.

Dis/reconnecting your broadband to enter a prize draw is pretty drastic - might be easier to buy an Instant Kiwi ticket!

You won't be able to Pat, other pre existing users have asked as well.

From their forums:

No you won't im sorry.

It only is available for tertiary students who joined / upgraded their account to broadband or dial-up since 1 Feb 2007.

Basically if you're on Dial up and upgrade you can go into the draw, but can't just change BB plan to be considered an upgrade.

Is it worth the risk? I went to help friend set up broadband who lives in very populated part of Hamilton. He had switched from telstraclear dial up to slingshot broadband. They were sent a letter saying that they should have the service on within 4 - 5 days. I arrived and as there was no dsl light on modem so rang helpdesk. Ooops sorry (blame telecom spiel, blah blah blah) but we cant get you up an running until approx 27th......... of April!!!!

My point - if there is a shortage of ports available then by disconnecting could put you at the bottom of a long list - just on the off chance you could win a nationwide draw.

Technically you could do it, but want a hassle to go through.
A lotto ticket might have better odd's a winning.

Bit sad to see gambling used as a new customer pull, so people do the strangest things to be into win.

No1 ever wins those things anyway man. They just give the money to some random they planted themselves and get it all back, happy with the business the stunt generated.

BWAHAHAHA have you ever actually run a promotion as part of a genuine business (a high profile one at that).

The $50k will be written off as promotional activity, and they will give it away.

And I thought *I* was cynical!

Even if you win, you only get 5K @ a 1 in 50 change to win 50k

Oh this brings back many memories... Win the "chance to win" a million dollars... The resulting prize was a lotto $5 lucky dip.

Maybe lame that they don't get an automatic 50,000, but at least they do get some gear out of it as opposed to "if you're picked you get nothing but the chance to win" ..

It may still be a marketing gimmick (hmm what are the other ISP's doing for students as well, anyone know off hand?) but at least it's not just a lotto ticket at the end ;)

Indeed!! It's better than nothing I suppose but I'm not going to bother persuing this anymore because I need my broadband connection.

Um from memory Woosh offer $49 (usually $99) connection fee for their wireless (with a student card), they were up at the Kelburn campus this whole week so they could have been offering something else. I think Orcon used to do something but don't anymore and Telstraclear are doing free broadband for a month in their Wellington store (but anyone can get that).

I don't think ISP's are targeting students because most of them just use the campus computers since some university's don't charge for using their broadband. Also most students would rather spend their money on booze!
